Objectives Define system oriented theory . Discus characteristic of system oriented theory Introduction of sister callista Roy. . Explain the Roy adaptation model. Elaborate the metaparadigms.

System Oriented Theory It is Proposed by Ludwig ,von Bertalanffy (1901_1972) as general system theory . It may be considered as a generalization system and a specialization of systems thinking. It is a science of wholeness . It has been applied in developing nursing theories and conducting nursing research.

Characteristics of system oriented theory Systems are self regulating Self correcting Systems are defined by its parts Process and have a structure Systems are generalization of reality Every living organisms is an open system Characteristic of a system include inputs, outputs ,controls and feed back.

Sister Callista Roy Born in Los Angeles, California on October 14, 1939. Designated as2007 living legend by the American Academy of Nursing. Master in Pediatric Nursing from University of California in 1966. Second Master and PhD in Sociology in 1973- 1977.

Cont. The Roy adaption model focuses on the four Adaptive system. The RAM Guides the nurse who is interested in physiologic and psychosocial adaption.

CONT: Dr. Roy also had the opportunity to be a Clinical Nurse Scholar two year Post-Doctoral program in Neuroscience at University of California. She selected this field to develop her understand-ing of the holistic person, especially as an adapt- ive system. And because of her familiarity with this clinical area because of her own neurological illnesses.

Professional experience Nurse aid at the age of 14. Pediatric nurse . Nursing instructor in many different capicities . She has lectured across the united states and in then 30 other countries.

STATEMENT OF THE THEORY The goal of nursing is to promote adaptation for individuals and groups in each of the four adaptive modes i.e. physiological needs, self- concepts, role function, and interdependent relations thus contributing to health quality of life, and dignity with dying".

Adaptation model of nursing Adaptation was first introduced to Dr. Roy in her psychology class. Her model was first published in 1970 Roy adaption model is currently one of the most widely used frame works in nursing practice , being applied by hundreds of nurses all over the word .

Adaptation of children While working as a Pediatric nurse, Roy had noticed the great resiliency of children and their ability to adapt in response to major physical and psychological changes. Theory development started in 1964.

According to Roy Adaptation Model A person is a holistic adaptive system and interacts constantly with its internal and external environment. The goal is to maintain system integrity in case of environmental stimuli. The nurse's role is to foster this adaptation.

Conti… Adaptation leads to: Optimum health and well-being Quality of life Death with dignity

Assumptions: Scientific Assumptions Philosophical Assumptions

Scientific Assumptions Systems of matter and energy progress to higher levels of complex self-organization. System relationship include acceptance ,protection and foeserting of interdependance . Person and enviromrnt transformations are created in human consciousnes.

Philosophical Assumptions Person have mutual relationships with world a nd God. God is intimately revealed in the diversity o f c reation and is the common destiny of c r e a t i o n . Person use human creative abilities of awareness and faith.

Metaparadigms 1: Person: Human systems have thinking and feeling capacities, rooted in consciousness and meaning, by which they adjust effectively to changes in the environment and, in turn affect the environment .

conti... 2:Environment : The environment is defined as conditions, circumstances, and influences that affect human development and behavior as an adaptive system. The environment is a stimulus or input that requires a person to adapt. These stimuli can be positive or negative.

conti... 3: Health: "Health is not freedom from the inevitability of death, disease, unhappiness, and stress, but the ability to cope with them in a competent way."

conti... 4. Nursing : The goal of nursing is promotion of adaptation for individuals and groups in each of the four adaptive modes, thus contributing to health, quality of life, and dying with dignity tteach Trends.
