ABSORPTION AND PERCOLATION RATE OF SOIL

ABSORPTION OF SOIL The quantity of water absorbed by the soil when a certain amount of water poured into the soil is its  absorption capacity. This absorption capacity varies for different types of soils.

EXPERIMENT Take 50 g  of soil in a funnel and pour it on the filter paper. Now take some water in a measuring cylinder ( U = 100ml ). Pour it drop by drop all over the soil.

Weight of soil = 50g. Initial volume of water in the measuring cylinder   U = 100 ml Final volume of water in the measuring cylinder =   V ml Therefore, the volume of water absorbed by the soil =  ( U – V )ml Weight of water absorbed by the soil = ( U – V )g

Percentage of water absorbed = ( U - V ) / 50 × 100%

SOIL TYPE WEIGHT OF THE SAND IN g INITIAL VOLUME U in ml FINAL VOLUME V in ml ABSORPTION OF WATER BY SAND PERCENTAGE OF WATER ABSORBED SANDY SOIL 50 100 70 30 60% CLAYEY SOIL 50 100 50 50 100% Clayey soil  absorbs more water than sandy soil.

PERCOLATION RATE OF SOIL Water percolation in the soil is the process of  water movement  through the soil.   Percolation rate   of water in the soil is the  speed  at which the  water moves  through the soil. Percolation rate of water in soil varies according to the type of soil.

EXPERIMENT Take a pipe of diameter 20 cm and insert into the soil. Take water of 200 ml in a beaker. Start the timer and start to pour the water into the pipe. Stop the timer when the water is completely absorbed by the soil.

Percolation rate( mL /min)= amount of water (ml) / percolation time (min) SANDY SOIL HAS HIGHER PERCOLATION RATE THAN CLAYEY SOIL. SOIL TYPE AMOUNT OF WATER (ml) PERCOLATION TIME (min) PERCOLATION RATE. SANDY 200 1 200ml/min CLAYEY 200 2.5 80ml/min
