Introduction Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) An air purifier or air cleaner is a device which removes contaminants from the air in a room to improve indoor air quality. These devices are commonly marketed as being beneficial to allergy sufferers and asthmatics , and at reducing or eliminating second-hand tobacco smoke . Air purifier (REF 4)
Literature Review Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) Aditya Roy , Chetan Mishra, Sarthak Jain, Naveen Solanki Aim of the paper: A review of general and modern methods of air purification. Aditya R oy and their teammates studied and reviewed some of the most modern methods of purifying air such as those using transparent PAN filters, photochemical materials, soy proteins and silk nanofibrils. It has been found that these methods provide an attractive and economical pathway of filtering out PM 2.5 when compared to the conventional HEPA filters. HEPA air filter and its particle trapping mechanism (REF 5)
Literature Review Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) 2. Renelyn Aljay A. Regalado, Rich Lorraine P. Ulanday∗ , Chuck Jenard B. Marte and John Jetro R. Francia Aim of the paper: Eco-Air Purifier Using Air Filter with Activated Carbon Renelyn Aljay and their team mates aimed to design and develop an eco-air purifier using an air filter with activated carbon. The developed air purifier helps students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders in the educational institution breathe fresh air in a room. A descriptive-development design was applied in the study. A systematic approach was employed for the development of the product. The functional acceptability of the project was assessed by three expert evaluators, consisting of electrical engineers in compliance with parts and hardware quality standards. The product was assessed in terms of functional stability, performance efficiency, usability, reliability, maintainability, portability, and also the quality of the product when using it in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, freedom from risk, and context coverage. The findings of the study revealed that the project performed its functionality well, performance efficiency, usability, reliability, maintainability, and portability.
Literature Review Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) 3. Tiberiu CATALINA and Alexandra- Elena FERARU Aim of the paper: Experimental study of the impact of air purifiers on the indoor air quality inside of an apartmen t . Tiberiu CATALINA and Alexandra- Elena FERARU did an experimental measurement and found that the air quality gets better than the previous one. At the beginning of measurements, the PM2.5 concentration in the living room, showed 20.64 μg /m 3 units and a decrease to 5.58 μg /m 3 units within 1 hour of system operating at High level and Humidification function ON (330 m3/h or 7.33 ach). The next step was to set the system to stage 2 (Low level – 150 m3/h or 3.33 ach) with humidification mode ON, which maintained the PM2.5 under 11 μg /m 3 , being considered a good ambient air quality. The results were even better during stage 3 and Humidification function OFF, PM2.5 reaching the lowest value of 4.2 μg /m 3. At the end of the experimental measurements the system was turned on Silent mode (max. 60 m3/h) and the PM2.5 average values were found in the range 8 to 13.3 μg /m 3.
Summary of Literature Review Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) It was concluded from the existing literature that there are various methods of air purification The literature reveals the need for improvement in the air quality and we can do that with the help of the air purifiers. It was concluded that the air quality index get improves by using the air purifier.
Components of Air Purifier Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) CASING - A casing is a substance or object that covers something and protects it from the outer surrounding 3 FAN - A fan is a powered machine used to create a flow of air. A fan consists of a rotating arrangement of vanes or blades MOTOR - A motor is a device that changes a form of energy into mechanical energy to produce motion. Electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. HEPA FILTER - Hepa filter, also known as high-efficiency particulate absorbing filter and high-efficiency particulate arrestance filter, is an efficiency standard of air filters. Hepa filters are pleated mechanical air filters that have a considerable thickness in order to capture the particulates.
Components of Air Purifier Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) ACTIVATED CARBON FILTER - Activated carbon is used to purify liquids and gases in a variety of applications. Activated carbon is produced from carbonaceous source materials, such as coconuts, nutshells, coal, peat and wood. PRE FILTER - A pre-filter is a filtering device that removes large particles from the air before it reaches the main filter, including dust, hair, insects, pollen, and various fibers. PELTIER MODULE (THERMOELECTRIC MODULE) - Peltier module (thermoelectric module) is a thermal control module that has both "warming" and "cooling" effects.
Accessories of Air Purifier Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) THERMOMETER - A thermometer is a device that measures temperature or a temperature gradient. A thermometer has two important elements: a temperature sensor in which some change occurs with a change in temperature; and some means of converting this change into a numerical value.
Department of Mechanical Engineering (DPG Institute of Technology and Management, Gurugram) Working of Air Purifier First of all, we will switch on the air purifier Then both fans of air purifier will start working, the first fan (which is located on the top of the purifier in horizontal direction) suck in the polluted air from the atmosphere in the purifier. Then in the air will pass through the filters i.e., dust cleaner, pre- filter, activated carbon filter, HEPA filter. Then in the purifier, the polluted air first passes through a pre filter. It is responsible for filtering out the biggest dirt clusters, dust and hair, thus protecting the other filters from premature wear. The next filter, through which the air passes is the carbon filter, which absorbs volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and unpleasant odor. The last stage of the filtration is the HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air Filter). It stops the smallest contaminants at almost 100% efficiency. After passing from all the filters, the purified air then become cool with the help of the specialized Peltier chip. The chip is connected with the second fan which helps to chill the air. Then the chilled and purified air will come out from the third fan.
