Market research for short film

1. Market Research A Level Media Studies Luka Andre Zurkic

2. Short Film Questionnaire To better understand the stance of the general audience when it comes to a short film, I sent out a questionnaire to around 25 people. I will use the information I got back from their responses to create initial ideas for my short film while also explaining why I won’t comply with some results.

3. Gender The results show that there is a larger male audience. This means I would need to target the male gender; however, my sample is not representative and therefore I will not target any gender.

4. Age Most of the audience is 15-20. I will have to create a plot which will engage these ages most.

5. Employment Most of my audience are students, this gives me an idea that my protagonist should show similar traits to someone of their age making the character relatable.

6. Watching short films My results from my sample are very mixed, showing that the majority would maybe watch a short film. I will have to make it interesting and of top quality to make sure they give it a watch.

7. Where do they watch short films The majority watch short films on YouTube, therefore I will be taking inspiration from YouTube short films and upload my short film to YouTube.

8. Favourite genre My idea is to create a horror short as I already have loads of inspiration and believe it’s the easiest to film for me. I will consider adding comedic lines/actions and action into my horror short as these genres obtained the highest percentages.

9. Length Most responses would like the short film to be 16-30 minutes long. Even though 79.2% wish for the short film to be longer than 5-7 minutes I will have to make it 5 minutes long as that is what the assignment requires.

10. Social media campaign The majority say that they would maybe follow a social media page, I would have to dive deeper into why they would or wouldn’t follow a social media page.

11. Social media platform Instagram dominates these results and TikTok in close second. These are the two apps I will consider making a social media campaign on.

12. Behind the scenes I will make behind the scenes interviews with actors/actresses and show film sets as the majority would like an insight on this.

13. Elements During the development of my film, I will mainly focus on the story.

14. Horror subgenres As I want to make a horror short, I asked more in depth questions on the horror genre. My horror will be psychological as supernatural won’t come out great on my budget. I would love to experiment with slashers in the future taking inspiration from the “Halloween” and “Terrifier” series.

15. Fear In my short I will make sure the audience is on the edge of there seats, trying to anticipate jump scares when none are coming. I will take inspiration from “Halloween” (1978) as I think they use this element to great effect.

16. Uneasy situations I will try to incorporate all the above situations as they scored relatively similar.

17. Feeling unsettled I will try to make the feeling of the short linger with the audience for as long as possible, making it memorable.

18. Effective level of threat I will start off with subtle unease that eventually leads to full on terror.

19. Ending For the ending of my short film, I can either make it a clear or an open ending as the results show that the audience is very closely divided on this subject.
