Atmosphere

Air Pollution
Air pollution is the contamination of air
due to the presence of substances called
pollutants in the atmosphere that are
harmful to the health of humans and other
living beings, or cause damage to the
climate or to materials.
The Air Act 1981 of India defines ‘air pollution’ as the presence of any dangerous
pollutant that makes the air unbreathable.

Section 2(a) defines ‘air pollutants’ as any solid liquid or gaseous substance which
may cause harm or damage the environment, humans, plants, animals or even damage
property. A 1987 amendment to the act also added ‘noise’ in the list of harmful
substances.

Air Pollutants

Sources of Air Pollution

•Photochemical smog, also known as summer smog, is a type of smog that is produced when UV
light originating from the sun interacts with the oxides of nitrogen present in the atmosphere.
This type of smog usually manifests as a brown haze and is most commonly seen in highly
populated cities that are placed in relatively warm climates. Furthermore, photochemical smog is
most prominently visible during the mornings and afternoons.
Photochemical Smog

•Common examples of primary pollutants that contribute towards photochemical smog
include oxides of nitrogen such as nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrous oxide and most
VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Common examples of secondary pollutants that
contribute towards the formation of photochemical smog include aldehydes, tropospheric
ozone, and peroxyacyl nitrates (often abbreviated to PAN).
Photochemical Smog

•PM stands for particulate matter (also called particle pollution): the term for a mixture of solid
particles and liquid droplets found in the air.
Particulate Matter (PM)
•PM10 : inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 10 micrometers and smaller;
and
•PM2.5 : fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and
smaller.

Air Quality Index
Launched by the central government in 2014 as part of the Swachh Bharat campaign,
the AQI was to help simplify the common understanding of pollution.

The AQI transforms complex air quality data of various pollutants into a single
number (index value), nomenclature and colour. The pollutants
measured include PM 10, PM 2.5, Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Carbon dioxide, etc.

The colour-coded AQI index helps the public and the government understand the
condition of the air and what subsequent measures are to be taken to combat the
situation, based on its severity.

Effects of Air Pollution

Scientists believe air pollution have a surprising
series of effects on insects, including bees, that
pollinate plants
Brown patches on these potato leaves are
evidence of moderate ozone damage.

Air Pollution Control
•Afforestation or Reforestation
• Desulphurization of Sulphur fuels
• Catalytic Converters in Automobiles
•Use of alternate sources of energy
•Control of fire accidents in industries.
•Develop awareness among the people
