CONTENT INTRODUCTION TYPES OF FORMWORK REASONS FOR SELECTING PLYWOOD EQUIPMENTS / TOOLS MATERIALS USED STAGES IN THE PROCESS CODES AND STANDARDS QA & QC 2
INTRODUCTION What is FORMWORK????? It is a temporary structure. Used as a mould for a structure in which the fresh concrete is poured. It helps to produce concrete members which will conform within the specified tolerances to shapes, lines, levels and dimensions and the quality of surface finishes required by the construction drawings and specifications . 3
REASONS FOR SELECTING PLYWOOD Easily cut to shape on-site It can be used several times, if handled and stored carefully. Cost effectiveness Smooth finish 5
MATERIALS USED Plywood boards Timber (2”x2” , 4”x4” , 2”x 4” ) GI Pipes T jacks, U jacks, Acro jacks P cones Wire nails Chains Form tie GI Clamps 8
STAGES IN THE PROCESS Design & Preparation Assembly & Erection Concrete placement & Curing Removal of Formwork 9
1.Design & Preparation Formwork is designed in accordance with BS5975 and the project specification. A drawing shall be agreed regarding special features in the formwork such as board widths, board direction and grid system & special arrangements of joints, arrangement of laths, arrangement and formation of the form ties and p cones. 10
2.Assembly & Erection The formwork should be coated with the mould oil. It should be fixed to ensure that no concrete leaks from the joints during the concrete placement process. 11 Column Form work
12 Wall formwork Slab and Beam formwork
13 Forms should be cleaned from dust, debris, rust or other stains. Free water should also be removed from the forms. ( by vacuum cleaning or compressed air) Before concreting, the cover, alignment, verticality, supports should be checked.
3.Concrete placement & Curing Concrete placement should start only when the required pre concreting QC checklist is prepared and signed off in accordance to inspection and testing requirements. Freshly cast concrete shall be protected from premature drying and excessively hot or cold temperature. Curing shall commence immediately after initial set of the concrete and shall continue for a minimum period of 7 days, for concrete made with high early strength cement, the curing shall continue for a minimum period of three days. MASTERKURE 128 and MIXCURE AC are using as the curing compound in this project. 14
4.Removal of Formwork The forms shall not be disturbed until the concrete in contact with them has hardened sufficiently to withstand such actions without damage. Formwork shall not be removed until the concrete has gained sufficient strength to support safely its own weight and any superimposed load without exceeding acceptable deflection. No masonry wall or similar permanent loading shall be erected on any part of the structure while the part is still supported by formwork. 15
Removal of Formwork… RECOMMENDED MINIMUM FORMWORK STRIPPING TIME Effective span is the maximum distance between supports (either temporary or permanent) 16
CODES & STANDARDS Formwork should be conformed to the current requirements of the following Codes and standards except where modified by this specification. BS 8110 - Structural use of concrete BS 5975 – Temporary works procedures AS 3610 - Australian Standard for Formwork 17
