HYUNDAI’S E-CORNER SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Hyundai’s autonomous driving division, Hyundai Mobis presented a unique in-wheel module with the Ioniq 5. Although, the concept was already showcased earlier in 2018, but the recent demonstration showcased in a more recognizable Ioniq 5, indicates that it might be available with Hyundai cars in the future.

WHAT IS HYUNDAI E-CORNER SYSTEM? The Hyundai E-Corner System is a concept aimed at improving the handling and performance of electric vehicles(EVs) It involves placing an electric motor in each wheel, allowing for independent control and adjustment of power to each wheel This system can enhance traction, stability, and maneuverability, making Evs more efficient and fun to drive.

WORKING OF E-CORNER SYSTEM The Hyundai E Cornering System was fully electric system. Which works on the electrical energy. The Hyundai e cornering system was controlled by (ECU) electronic control unit. The ECU Controls all the angles and movement of the e cornering system. The UN WHEEL MOTOR, STEER BY WIRE AND BRAKE BY WIRE are the major parts of this system. All these controlled by ECU

DIFFERENT DRIVE MODES IN E-CORNER SYSTEM CRAB DRIVING PIVOT TURN ZERO TURN DIAGONAL DRIVING

CRAB DRIVING All four wheels turn 90 degrees to perform parallel movement. Convenient for parking in narrow spaces.

PIVOT TURN Choose any point for central axis to rotate the vehicle accordingly. Unique movement like drawing a circleusing a compass

ZERO TURN Front wheels rotate inside while rear wheels turn outside to perform 360 degrees idle turn Easy to turn the direction of a vehicle in a limited space with minimum movement

DIAGONAL DRIVING Rotating all four wheels to the same direction for diagonal movement Unique way to avoid obstacles and vehicles

DIFFERENT DRIVE MODES IN E CORNER SYSTEM

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 2 WHEEL & 4 WHEEL STEERING Two wheel steering is the conventional steering system where only the front wheels are responsible. A two wheel steering system is the standard setup in most vehicles. Four wheel steering involves using all four wheels for steering. Offering enchanced maneuverability and stability.

ADVANTAGES Improved maneuverability: Making it easier to navigate tight spaces and execute sharp turns Stability at high speeds: especially during lane changes and highway driving Reduced turning radius:Four wheel steering reduces the turning radius Off-Road Capability:In some off-Road vehicles four wheel can enhance stabilityon challenging terrain.

DISADVANTAGE Cost: E corner systems are more complex and expensive to manufacture and maintain, adding to the overall cost of the vehicle. Potential for Maintenance Issues: The additional mechanical components increase t he maintenance and repair cost. Limited Adoption: Four wheel steering is not standard in most vehicles, limiting its availability to a broad range of customers. Complexity: The system’s complexity can make diagnosis and repairs more challenging. Driver Adaption : Some drivers may need time to adapt to the different steering response, especially when the rear wheels move in the opposite direction during certain maneuvers.

CONCLUSION The Hyundai E-Corner System with 4-wheel steering represents an innovative approach to vehicle dynamics and handling. By incorporating four-wheel steering, Hyundai has enhanced maneuverability, stability, and cornering performance, resulting in a more agile and responsive driving experience. This system can contribute to improved safety and driver confidence, making it a noteworthy advancement in automotive technology.
