-: Integrated farming system :- (IFS) Model Farming System & Sustainable Agriculture Course code :- cc_agl 432 Swastik Bhattacharjya UID NO:- TNU2019032100090 SEC:- B ; 4 th SEMESTER

-: Introduction to IFS :- Integrated Farming System (IFS) is a combination of many systems like crop production, raising livestock, fishery, poultry, beekeeping etc. , it attempts to increase farmers income using natural resources on sustainability basis which can be obtained by integrating crop husbandry with allied enterprises is called as IFS. Integrated Farming (IF) is a whole farm management system which aims to deliver more sustainable and secure agriculture. System implies a group of interacting or related components, operating together for achieve a common purpose and desired goals. It is based on concept that ‘there is no waste’ and ‘waste is only a misplaced resource.’ That means effectively use of the end product of one system as an input to the other system. Recycling of wastes and residues is a main concept of it. According to IOBC, Integrated Farming System (IFS) is defined as biologically integrated farming system which integrates the natural resources and regulation mechanisms into farming activities to achieve maximum replacement of farm inputs, secures sustainable production of high quality foods and other products though ecologically preferred technologies, sustained farm income and eliminates or reduces the sources of present environmental pollutants generated by agriculture and sustains the multiple function of agriculture. The main objective is:- higher profitability without altering ecological and socio-economic balance on one hand and to meet the national goals on the other hand.

-: Concepts of IFS :- Now a days, Food security, water security, environmental protection and natural resource conservation are major issues emerged in globally to protect our mother nature as well as earth. That’s why the Sustainable development is very much required in today’s degraded environment. About 29% or about 96.4 million hectares are considered degraded. Integrated Farming System (IFS ) is a whole farm management system incorporating various sectors of farming to minimize the pollutions caused by those enterprises, which leads to deliver more Sustainable Agriculture by efficiently utilization of natural resources. Main Concepts of Integrated Farming System :- Effectively recycling of waste and residues of one component as input to another component. Achievement of Agro-Ecological equilibrium by optimum management of all natural resources Increasing in profitability by reducing the cost of production. Adoption of efficient Cropping pattern, Crop rotations, application of all organic materials for minimizing the nutrient losses, avoiding the application of synthetic fertilizers etc. Enhancement of the productivity in per unit area per unit time by increasing the input use efficiency that means the intensification of crop and allied enterprises. By the application of such eco-friendly Bio-control measures for pest and diseases, manures, compost, biofertilizers , organic seed treatment methods, mulching instead of chemical pesticide & herbicides can effectively lead to Environmental safety and decrease the cost. Effective utilization of all family labours in various sectors throughout the year. Effective recycling of organic wastes to generate green pollution free energy (Bio gas, Bio fuel). Maximization in nutrient efficiency by integrating two or more components of a Farm.

-: Components of IFS :- Various Components of Integrated Farming System (IFS):- Agriculture (Crop Cultivation) Horticulture (Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers, Spices, Medicinal & Aromatic cultivation) Fish Farming Dairy Farming Agro Forestry Poultry farming Duck Farming Sheep rearing Piggery Sericulture Apiculture Mushroom Cultivation Vermiculture / Vermicompost Bio-gas Plant Quail & Turkey Farming

Integrated farming system of rice, cattle, poultry & fishery farming -: Name of the Particular IFS Model :-

Component-1:- Agriculture (Rice Cultivation) I’ve total 5 bigha land. To utilize all the lands effectively, I was started Integrated farming. DETAILS OF CROP PRODUCTION:- Name of the Crop:- Rice ( Swarna Variety). All seasonal Rice are generally cultivated. Total Land Area :- 4 bigha Transplanted method is generally followed as Planting Method. Mainly Wet Bed Nursery is prepared. All the general and common techniques of rice farming are also followed in my plot. SIGNIFICANCE OF RICE FARMING:- I obtain near about 30-32 q rice yield from the 4 bigha land. But this yield fluctuates with seasons. It gives me a satisfactory return throughout the year. The main feed materials of cattle Dry roughages like Straw & Hay also the Rice Husks are mostly obtained from my rice farming. Even for the preparation of litter and bed materials in Dairy & Poultry farm Hay or Straw are the indispensible part. Crop residues or left over part of the plant can also be used for preparing Farm Yard Manure with the Dairy, Poultry, Fishery by-products. Some amounts of rice-broken part is also used as poultry feed materials. Some residues of field (Cut grasses), the by-products of rice or rice bran and the edible cake which is used in rice field mainly as manure also given to the pond as feed of fishes.

Component-2:- Dairy Farming DETAILS OF DAIRY FARMING:- Details about the cattle:- Total 10 cattle are present. Within 2 cows are indigenous breed , 2 cows are Sahiwal breed, 4 cows are Jersey and 2 buffaloes are there. All the cows are tagged by the local Veterinary office. Total Land Area :- 4 katha Loose Housing system is made by Mangalore Tiles or Asbestos sheet . Cemented floor and wall is present. The housing is also constructed towards North-South direction. Basically the Roughages, with this Some Cereal grain byproducts ( Chokar Cattle feed ) are provided as feed materials to the cattle. Sometimes required amount of vitamins are given. SIGNIFICANCE OF DAIRY FARMING :- This dairy farm acts as an additional income as well as also an alternative source of income at the time of any uncertainty. I obtain 520-600 lit milk per month gives me a better earnings. All the dairy waste products (Cow dung, Cow urine, remaining feed materials) are effectively used for preparation of Organic manures. Mixing Cow dung with straw produces Cow dung cake which is considered as a best alternative source of the fuel. The litter which is provided in cattle shed can also be used to prepare a good quality FYM & Compost, it can also be used in poultry farm as a bed material. Buffaloes are also used for tillage, threshing, planking and for other agricultural practices.

Component-3:- Poultry Farming DETAILS OF POULTRY FARMING:- Details about the poultry:- 50 layers are present in the poultry farm. Within that some breeds are Haringhata black, Giriraja , Gramapriya and few White Leghorn are also accommodated there. Total Land Area :- 1 katha Basically to accommodate all compounds within 5 bigha land, the poultry farm was constructed over the pond where the fishes are reared. Well-ventilated, hygiene and good-drained housing is present in the farm, constructed towards East-West direction. Balanced feed material are provided to poultry like Rice-broken part, Oil cakes, Oyster shell etc. for their better health & hygiene. SIGNIFICANCE OF POULTRY FARMING:- This poultry farm also acts as a substitute earning of main rice cultivation. I can obtain near about 30-40 eggs per day. Poultry excreta or other related products help to produce an effective Poultry manure which is really rich in Nitrogen are generally applied in the field. Due to construction of poultry farm over the pond, some amount of droppings of poultry farm, worms are felled in the pond, which are considered as a good nutritive feed material of fishes. Poultry litter is an acceptable source of protein feed stuffs for beef cattle, but it should be carefully applied in balanced ration with the main feed materials.

Component-4:- Fishery DETAILS OF FISHERY:- Available Fishes in Pond:- Rohu ( Labeo rohita ) , Silver Carp ( Hypophthalmichthys molitrix ), Cyprinus capio , Mrigal etc. are mainly present in pond. Total Land Area :- 17 katha land of the Pond. Pond is totally surrounded with bund, no chance to overflow of the water. Application of some lime, Mustard cake is followed sometimes to keep the pond weed free or maintain the pH of pond. All the required or essential management strategies are followed to maintain the suitable climate of pond. All required feed materials (Rice bran, Oil seed cake, Poultry droppings, by-products of rice) are provided to the Pond. SIGNIFICANCE OF FISHERY:- Most of the people are fond of the fishes with their meals. That’s why I obtain a satisfactory return by selling the commercial fishes from this sector. Moreover the large amount of water which is needed for irrigation in field, using in dairy and poultry farm are mainly collected from this pond. Sometimes the Fish meal, blood meal are also produced from those fishes and applied in agriculture field as a concentrated organic manure and nutritive feed for cattle. Some fishes also helps to supress the mosquito infestation in poultry farm by consuming those mosquito larvae. Some floating plants over the pond are sometimes used for mixing with manure or compost. Oyster shells, stones, pebbles all the minerals or calcium rich feed materials of poultry are generally obtained from this pond side.

-: Interaction between the Components :-

-: Significance of the IFS Model :- Solo enterprise or depending upon only the Crop production can’t generate the satisfactory earning in today’s world. Moreover the wastages or the residues of crops, repeated application of chemical fertilizers, herbicides can cause severe environmental degradation. For creating a secure, profitable sustainable agriculture, Integrated farming System should be adopted by every farmers to keep their environment safe and best soil quality as well as to get regular earnings. SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS MODEL:- Efficiently recycling of all waste products, residues and the by-products emerged from various sectors as an effective input in other related sectors. No cost incurred is happened for waste product management. Continuous income or cash flow always enables in this Integrated farming by selling eggs, fishes, rice, milks or other milk by-products. The earning of different enterprises always support farmer’s mental condition as well as became a substitute earning option at the time of failure or any uncertainties. This regular flow of money throughout the season always provides an opportunity to farmer to adopt all improved technologies for further developmental process. Due to intensification of various sectors, we can get balanced food materials like fishes, eggs, milk or other milk by-products, rice, some leafy vegetables from the pond side etc. Not only that, the animals also can obtain various nutritious feed materials like Rice bran, Oyster shells, Droppings, Straw and other plants. By taking such initiative, We can create totally Organic agriculture, no use of any synthetic chemical materials in Rice field. Use of home made FYM, compost, excreta from Dairy & Poultry farming, bio-agents for repelling the pests & diseases lead the production more eco-friendly and Environment safety. Minimize the farm expenditure by incorporating or proper residue recycling and allied components, like saving cost of feed materials of livestock & fishes and the chemical fertilizers. Crop-livestock integration increases labor requirement through the year and various Agro-industries. Due to application of various organic products in field, it always remains the soil in good health. By efficiently utilization of every piece of land and all the natural resources, effectively increase the Input-use efficiency and promote the better food and nutritional security .
