CELLS
What are cells ?
Cells Cells are the smallest unit of living things that can carry out basic processes of life. Most cells are microscopic. Cells come from other pre-existing cells or another cells. A cell divided or split into two new cells and so did the cells before that and so on.
What is inside a cell ?
What is inside a cell ? All organism are made up of cells and your own body has more than 200 different kinds of cells. Plant and animal cells have several basic structure, called Organelles , that help them perform life processes. Organelles have functions that help keep cells alive.
ANIMAL CELLS Part of Animal Cells
Cell Membrane It is a flexible wrapping that surrounds an animal cell. It is layer around the outside of the cell. It wraps around the cells the same way your skin wraps around you. It gives the cell its shape. It control what material move into and out of the cell. Only certain substances are able to enter and leave the cell. Cell Membrane
Cytoplasm It is a gel like liquid that fills the region between the nucleus and the cell membrane. It is mostly made up of water which a variety of organelles float in the cytoplasm. It supports all cell’s structures and it constantly moves through the cell in stream like motion. Some of the cells life processes take place in the cytoplasm. Cytoplasm
Nucleus The brain of the cell. It is the cell’s control center and most cells have this. It is a large, round organelle usually found in the center of the cell. Easy to see with a microscope. It has a membrane with pores or opening that allow certain material to pass in and out. Nucleus
Mitochondria It is powerhouse of the cell. They are oval, membrane covered organelles that supply energy for the cell. They break down food which releases energy for the cell to use Each mitochondria is a tiny powerplant. Cells that require a lot of energy such as muscle cells have many mitochondria. Mitochondria
Vacuoles It is a membrane covered structure used for storage. It can store water, food and wastes. The nucleus can signal a vacuole to release whatever it is storing. Some animal cells, have many small vacuoles and some may not have any vacuoles. Vacuoles
