Anne with an E is a coming-of-age
drama based on Anne of Green Gables
by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It follows
Anne Shirley, an intelligent, and
imaginative orphan who is mistakenly
adopted by Marilla and Matthew
Cuthbert, elderly siblings who had
intended to adopt a boy to help with
farm work. Despite having a difficult
past in foster homes and orphanages,
Anne's resilience and passion for
life begin to transform the
lives of those around
her in the small town of Avonlea. As she grows up, Anne faces challenges
with her own identity, gender roles in
society, bullying, and acceptance. She
forms deep friendships, experiences young
love, and uses her voice to stand up for
justice and equality. Through her journey,
Anne inspires change in a conservative
society and finds the family and belonging
she has always longed for. The series is
rich in emotional depth and tackles
modern themes while
staying true to the heart
of the beloved classic. Summary
Why do I love this
work of art?
Plot For me, Anne with an E's plot is impressive because it
expands on the original novel, exploring timely and relevant
social issues such as gender inequality, racism, and LGBTQ+
discrimination within a historical setting, while remaining
faithful to the source material in its portrayal of character
development and the enduring themes of identity and
belonging. The series uses Anne's experiences as an orphan to
highlight the period's societal limitations and the power of
individuality and hope.
Themes Feminism and Gender Roles
Anne is fiercely independent and outspoken, challenging the gender norms of her time.
The series includes broader feminist messages, including education for girls, female
empowerment, and the right to define one's future.
Themes Social Injustice and Prejudice
The show adds storylines that tackle racism, homophobia, classism, and sexism. Racism Homophobia and Sexism Classism
Themes Education and Intellectual Freedom
Anne’s thirst for knowledge and imagination challenges the limited education and
expectations for girls.
The show promotes critical thinking, creativity, and the power of literature and learning.
Cinematography This show featured sceneries, including Prince Edward Island’s beaches and cliffs, many times
throughout the show, paired with orange hues and lighting, which left me feeling a warm
embrace. This emphasizes Anne’s imaginative escape, being often used in emotional scenes.
Costume The characters’ costume design left me
in awe with how great they look on
everyone, as well as how historically
accurate they were. They are also an
implication of the characters’ status.
Just like how Diana is wearing a dress
with ruffles and Anne with none. One
of my favorites is Anne in the blue
dress, which was a perfect match for
her blue eyes and auburn hair.
