Philippine Literature ENGLISH CLASS

OBJECTIVES At the end of this module, you are expected to: distinguish features of academic writing; cite evidence to support a general statement; use non-linear visuals as comprehensive aids in content texts; and compose simple informative texts.

Which Text? Literary Academic

LITERARY and ACADEMIC

LITERARY WRITING used in creative and literary work, mainly fiction stories uses many literary figures like metaphors

ACADEMIC WRITING backed up by evidence or facts to aid the reader’s understanding of the text.

PARTS OF A SIMPLE PARAGRAPH 1. Topic Sentence 2. Supporting Sentences 3. Concluding Sentence

Topic Sentence Supporting Sentences Concluding Sentence the main idea of the paragraph evidence or details that support the main idea sums up the main idea

Example 1 Studying is a sacrifice, but it is a sacrifice worth making. It takes a lot of effort, time, money, and determination. There are times when students fail or do not meet their or others’ expectations. However, one must strive and finish his/her studies. After all, education is a companion one brings throughout life.

Example 2 A doctor is a person who looks after the sick people and prescribes medicines so that the patients recover fast. To become a doctor, a person has to study medicine. Doctors lead a hard life. They get up early in the morning and go to the hospital. They work without taking a break. Since doctors work so hard, we must realize their value.

How helpful are the parts of a paragraph (topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence) in organizing ideas?

Music is something that we all enjoy. It is the sound that is brought together through a harmony of instruments and singing voices. Our mothers sing us lullabies so that we can sleep peacefully. In the mornings, we listen to birds chirping and the leaves of plants and trees rustling, even this is like music to our ears. Music is everywhere, all we have to do is open our ears to hear it.

In using nonlinear visuals, only words or phrases are used.

Non-Linear

Linear When conducting an interview, it is good to prepare a list of questions. A good starting point is to ask who, what, where, when, and why, as they apply to your topic. Refrain from asking yes-no questions. Instead, ask questions that will prompt the interviewee to say more. Keep your questions simple and direct. Also, be ready to take down notes or you might prefer to use a tape recorder. For an interview to be successful, you must show that you are interested and are eager to listen.
