CH 1 PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND NON –DESTRUCTIVE TESTING By Mrs. Archana Warude Sr.Lecturer(Physics) Dept: Science & Humanities Subject: Applied Science(Physics)22202

Learning Outcomes Deforming Force Restoring Force Elasticity Plasticity Stress

DEFORMING FORCE

DEFORMING FORCE DEFINITION: The external force acting on a body on account of which its size or shape or both change is defined as the deforming force.

RESTORING FORCE DEFINITION: The force which is responsible to restore original size and shape of the body is called as restoring force.

ELASTICITY The property on account of which a body regains its original size and shape on removal of external deforming force is called as elasticity.

Plastic deformation

PLASTICITY

PLASTICITY The property on account of which a body easily deforms very easily and does not regain its original size and shape on removal of external deforming force is called as plasticity.

RIGIDITY The property on account of which a body does not change its size and shape even a large force is applied on it is called as rigidity.

STRESS Stress is defined as internal elastic restoring force per unit cross-sectional area of a body. Stress = Internal restoring force/cross sectional area Stress = Applied force/cross sectional area Stress = F/A MKS or SI unit of stress is N/m 2 or Pascal (Pa) CGS unit of Stress is dyne/cm 2

MCQ 1) SI unit of stress is…………… a) N/m 2 b) dyne/cm 2 c)no unit d)Both a and b 2) Rubber is an example of ……. a) plastic body b) elastic body c) rigid body d) none of these 3) Stone is a……. a ) plastic body b) elastic body c) rigid body d) none of these
