Pregnancy is considered to be an important phase in woman’s life. During the nine months journey, the pregnant lady goes through certain mild illnesses such as nausea and vomiting in the first trimester. Other garbhopdrava’s such as fever, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, constipation and miscarriage can occur during pregnancy. Ayurveda has given prime importance to antenatal care as women gives birth to a new life. Antenatal care helps to assess and improve the wellbeing of the mother and the baby throughout the pregnancy. It helps to reduce the risks and other complications that arise during pregnancy. In ayurveda, the care of the pregnant lady and the new born baby has been well explained in Samhita’s. Also, ayurveda has mentioned certain formulations which can reduce the symptoms that occur during the phase of pregnancy. One such formulation is garbhapal rasa which is mentioned in rasatantrasara siddhaprayoga sangraha which counteracts the minor ailments during pregnancy and prevents miscarriage and ensures better nourishment to the fetus. In this study, we will review on the application of garbhapal rasa in pregnancy.

References contd.. 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 5 ( १४१) गर्भपाल रस विधि - शुद्ध सिंगरफ, नागभस्म शतपुटी, बंगभस्म, त्रिजात (दाल-चीनी तेजपात और इलायची), त्रिकटु (सोंठ, मिर्च, पीपल), धनियां, कालाजीरा, चव्य, मुनक्का, देवदारु ये १४ द्रव्य १-१ तोला, लोह भस्म ६ माशे लें। सबको यथाविधि मिला सफेद अपराजिता (कोयल) के रस में ७ दिन तक खरल करके १-१ रत्ती की गोलियां बना लें। वक्तव्य—प्रयोगों में नागभस्म मिलानी हो तब नागभस्म शतपुटी मिलानी चाहिये। कम पुटवाली मिलाने पर उचित लाभ नहीं मिल सकेगा। मात्रा - १ मे २ गोली, दिन में २ बार। मुनक्का के जल में देवें। मुनक्का २ ॥ तोले को १०-२० तोले जल में भिगो मसलकर पिलावें । उपयोग - यह रंस गर्भस्राव और गर्भपात होने से बचाता है, तथा गर्भिणी के अतिसार, ज्वर, प्रदर, श्वास, कास, वमन, मन्दाग्नि, अरुचि, वातवृद्धि, शूल, मलावरोध, शिरदर्द आदि को दूर करके गर्भ को बलवान और नीरोग रखता है। ।

References contd.. 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 6 Rasatantrasagar Siddhaprayoga Sangraha Prathama Khanda, Kharaliya Rasayana 141 कई स्त्रियों का गर्भाशय शिथिल होने से और देह में अधिक उष्णता रहने से गर्भपात हो जाता है, एवं पति वीर्य विकारी हो तो भी गर्भपात हो जाने की संभावना है, इनके अतिरिक्त उपदंश अथवा सुजाक के कारण गर्भाशय में विकृति होने पर गर्भपात होने की विशेष भीति रहती है । उस पर पहिले रक्तशोधक औषध के साथ गर्भपाल देने से गर्भिणी और गर्भ दोनों की रक्षा होती है । यदि बीजकोषों की पूर्ण परिमाण में वृद्धि न होने से गर्भस्राव या गर्भपात होता हो, तो वंग या त्रिवंग भस्म के साथ गर्भपाल देने से गर्भ वृद्धि और रक्षण में सहायता मिलती है । अनेक स्त्रियों को गर्भधारण के पश्चात् भोजन कर लेने पर तत्काल वमन, चक्कर, घबराहट, ऐंठन, शिरदर्द, कमर में शूल आदि लक्षण होते हैं । उस पर गर्भपाल रस के साथ कामदुधा, प्रवाल भस्म अथवा सुवर्णमाक्षिक भस्म देने से सब विकारों का शमन होता है। किसी- किसी स्त्री के बच्चे जन्म के बाद थोड़े ही दिनों में अथवा थोड़े ही महीनों में बार- बार मर जाते हैं, उनमें प्राय: रजोवीर्य या स्त्रीदुग्ध में दोष रहता है यह दोष- गर्भचिन्तामणि या गर्भपाल के सेवन से दूर होता है

12. 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 12 Critical analysis of Ingredients Drugs like Shuddha Hingula , Naga Bhasma, Loha Bhasma and pippali possess Rasayana property. As the word rasayana defines itself as the one that brings about apyayana of rasa raktadi dhatu, the manipulation of these factors in the intrauterine life can give a definite scope in the growth and nourishment of the mother and fetus and also in the prevention of diseases. Naga Bhasma, Ela, Draksha and Twak has Madhura rasa. Madhura rasa helps in growth of the sapta dhatus and ojas . It improves the general strength and complexion. Shuddha hingula , Naga bhasma , Vanga Bhasma, Ela, swarasa of aparajit , Dhanyaka , Ela, Devadaru , Krishna Jiraka and chavya possess properties like kaphavata hara and tridhosha hara. These properties is useful to conteract the minor ailments like chardi , kasa , shwasa , shirashula occurring in garbhini .

13. 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 13 Critical analysis of Ingredients Loha bhasma , draksha and twak has balya (strengthening) and brahmana (nourishing) properties which maintains and supports the pregnancy. Loha bhasma also possess properties such as rakta vardhaka property which may increase the blood supply of uterus. Krishna jiraka possess garbhashaya vishodhaka property. It removes removes the dushta shonita from garbhashaya . It normalises the lochial discharge and does proper uterine involution

Applications of Garbhapala Rasa in pregnancy According to Rasa Chandanshu , Garbhapala Rasa of 1-1 gutika is administered from one to nine months of pregnancy along with Draksha Kwatha followed by wholesome diet. According to Rasatantrasara siddhaprayoga sangraha , it is indicated in Garbhasrava and garbhapata with raktashodhaka aushadha as anupana . In case of H/O repeated abortions or miscarriage, the formulation is administered along with vanga or trivanga Bhasma. Pregnant ladies often suffer from vomiting, nausea and dizziness soon after the intake of food. Other minor ailments include headache, backache, anxiety. In such cases, garbhapala rasa along with kamdudha Rasa, Pravala Bhasma or Suvarna Makshika Bhasma can be administered which will pacify these ailments. Other indications include jwara , atisara , kasa , shwasa , mandagni , vata vruddhi , shula , mala avarodha . ( Anupana - ushnodaka ) 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 14

Research Articles 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 16 94 pregnant women were subjected for this study. 55 women were supplemented with 120 mg bid ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ along with folic acid, while 39 pregnant women of control group supplemented with folic acid only. Aim of study was to evaluate efficacy of Garbhpal Ras in nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. In follow up period it was clearly seen that relief in vomiting was more in trail group, none women of ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ group had vomiting till 3rd follow up. Haematological and biochemical blood parameters was assessed where in the level of haemoglobin was found significantly increased in pregnant women administered with ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ as well as in cases of control group. ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ does not produce any haemopoitic toxicity. N ormal levels of biochemical parameters till the end of treatment, showed non-toxic nature of ‘ Garbhpal Rasa’.

17. 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 17 In this study, safety of Garbhpal Ras was evaluated on its chronic administration in Albino rats. The Garbhpal Ras was administered orally for 180 consecutive days in doses of 12, 40 and 80 mg /kg i.e. 3, 10 and 20 times higher than the recommended dose. Effect of Garbhapala Rasa on liver of rats did not reveal any abnormal hepatotoxic effect. Effect of ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ on haematology of rats was observed that there was no significant alteration in all hematology parameters. Biochemical parameters showed that ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ did not cause any disturbance in synthesis of albumin even at high dose. Effect of ‘ Garbhpal Ras’ on kidney did not cause any adverse toxic effect on renal function. Biochemical parameter revealed that excretory function of kidney was well maintained, as there was no rise in the values of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and serum creatinine levels in rats treated with ‘ Garbhpal Ras’

Conclusion Garbhpala Rasa, a well known ayurvedic herbo -mineral formulation is used during antenatal period in cases of vomiting, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite and habitual abortions or miscarriages thus ensuring better nourishment to foetus . The formulation contains minerals such as hingula , naga , vanga and loha bhasma . Our acharya’s have tremendous knowledge on purification of these minerals. It is very much necessary that these minerals undergo proper purification procedures with different liquid media’s (which helps to eliminate the toxins) and attain siddhi lakshana’s before administering it to the patients. Pharmacological actions such as brihmana , rasayana , balya , kaphahara , garbhashodhaka and rakta vardhaka properties is required for healthier pregnancy as well as for the foetus . 9/4/2023 JANANI 2023 19
