CONTENT TO BE COVERED : WHAT IS TGA (THERMO GRAVIMETRIC ANALYSIS) ? DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS OF TGA . HOW THEY ARE USEFUL TO US . WHAT PROCESS THEY INVOLVES .
WHAT IS TGA : TGA stands for thermo gravimetric analysis . It measures the change of weight of a sample as a function of temperature . Its useful to detect loss of sample decomposition , oxidation & loss of solvents .
List of applications : Ceramics application . Metal material application . Carbon capture . Polymer application . Pharmaceuticals . Food . Printed circuit board & so on….
Ceramics : Silicon carbide (sic) ceramics has benefits of low density , high strength under high temperature . Corrosion , erosion . The material is stable upto 1300°c environment . It is commonly hot , wearing & harsh environment & related application . It has been major research topic of material science . Sic can be tested by tga , its growth rate curve & isothermal oxidation kinetics .
Metal material : TGA can help to know the composition of metal alloys . Also we can estimate thermal stability lifetime of metals . High temperature oxidation & reduction of metals . Metal corrosion measurements .
Carbon capture : CaO material’s higher conversion rate of capturing carbon & rate of formation of CaCO3 which is thermodynamically stable . The CO2 capture properties of CaO materials can be measured by TGA . Under elevated temperature , it captures CO2 & merges with Cao & generates a dense CaCO3 on the surface layer .
Polymers : The thermoplastic polymer is common in packaging & household items . For analysis of raw materials , DSC can be used to analyze the effect of additives & optimization of materials . Polymer composition analysis is the advantage of TGA which separates the filler , polymeric resin & other additives . TGA can also test the thermal stability & effects like flame retardant .
Pharmaceutical materials : TGA analysis is often used in research of pharma material characteristics . By adjusting heating rates ,we can identify different polymorphic structures . Typically at heating about 750° per minute we could measure the purity of polymorph . TGA is often used to measure the residual solvent & water & also to determine solubility of drug material in a solvent .
FOOD : Most changes are related to food temperature mainly in production, transportation, storage, preparation, consumption , etc .f It enhances certain chemical reaction such as hydrolysis , melting , crystallization or gelation . More accurate understanding of the effects of temperature on properties of food , make food manufacturers improve production technology & improve product quality .
PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS : Power consumption is an important issue in today’s PCB design . In addition to reliability problems , excess heat will affect the performance & safety of the equipment . An integrated circuit operating temperature should be kept below limit makes circuit damaged . Thermal analyzed printed circuit board can be used .
