CONCEPTS OF ACIDS AND BASES ARRHENIUS concept of acids and bases
ACIDS BASES Acids have sour taste. For example, unripe citrus fruits or lemon juice. Bases have bitter taste and feel slippery for example, soap is slippery to touch.
ACIDS BASES They turn blue litmus red. They are corrosive in concentrated form. They turn red litmus to blue. They are non-corrosive except concentrated form of NaOH and KOH.
ACIDS BASES Their aqueous solutions conduct electric current. Their aqueous solutions conduct electric current.
ARRHENIUS presented acids and bases concept in 1787 According to Arrhenius concept…..
What are acids?
Acid is a substance which dissociates in aqueous solution to give hydrogen ions. EXAMPLE: HCl gives hydrogen ions in its aqueous solution.
What are bases?
Base is a substance which dissociates in aqueous solution to give hydroxide ions. EXAMPLE: KOH gives hydroxide ions in its aqueous solution
Limitations of ARRHENIUS concept: This concept is applicable only in aqueous medium and does not explain nature of acids and bases in non-aqueous medium
This concept explain the nature of only those compounds which contain hydrogen and hydroxide ions, it can not explain the nature of compounds like CO2 and NH3 etc.
