Art, Science, and Technology of Safeguarding the Outstanding Engineering Faculty Members from the Institutional Hazards, Planned Destructions, and Booby Traps Thanikachalam Vedhathiri, B.E., M. Tech., Ph.D., M.S., [email protected]

Fast-Growing Developing Countries In this 21 st Century, many developing countries in Asia are growing faster than in the 20 th Century It is due to the government’s policy to open the economy to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and permit Foreign Institutional Investors in their stock markets FDIs establish new production units due to open economy, infrastructure, power, resource persons, highly skilled workers, technicians, engineers, managers, etc. This demands excellent engineering graduates, industry-specific and accredited curricula, outstanding faculty teams, and up-to-date institutional resources.

INSTITUTIONAL HAZARDS & SECURITY TOXIC LEADER SECURITY

Growth of Toxic Leaders The growth of toxic leaders in engineering education prevents the growth of the needed academic environment, institutional support, and delegation of authority to outstanding faculty teams. Many institutions also suffer due to want of motivated students, retaining outstanding faculty members, offering up-to-date graduate and postgraduate programs, offering consultancy projects, planning diverse global faculty development programs, and generating revenue and royalties through intellectual properties and publications .

Toxic Leaders Lacks self-control Ignores the rights of faculty members Harms the institution negatively ( Nourhan Md. Younis, et al. 2022) Individual attitudes and behaviors are affected by negative aspects more than positive aspects (Contreras, et al. 2019; Baumeister, et al. 2001)

Characteristics of Toxic Leaders Author Type Harms Lipman Blumen (2005) Type I: Intentionally toxic leader Harms high-performing faculty members and enhances himself depending on others’ expense Type II: Unintentionally toxic leader Harms faculty members with careless and reckless behavior Harms most of the faculty members who don’t serve his/her needs

Behavior of Toxic Leaders Author Harms Impact Kellerman (2004) Seven Common Characteristics: Incompetent, Rigid, Intemperate, Callous, Corrupt, Insular, & Evil Incapable of developing high-performing institutes; Highly qualified faculty are unwilling to adapt to poor ideas and lack self-control; ignore ideas and options; Lie, cheat, or steal Lipman Blumen (2005) Personality traits determine toxic leaders The arrogance that denies their mistakes and blames others; a lack of integrity; never allowing others to express their views

Measures to Safeguard the High-Performing Faculty Teams The Governing Board has to check the negative impacts, reduce workplace deviance, and reduce the number of faculty members leaving. Plan to increase the level of job satisfaction and institutional commitment. Get continuous feedback on toxic leader’s discretion-based orders A standing committee of the Board can be constituted to monitor the deviations and harmful decisions. Can correct the behavior through investigations. Corrective action can be taken to safeguard the outstanding faculty members and accelerate the growth of the performances of faculty members.

Art of Safeguarding the Faculty Members from Planned Destruction Deducting continuous discrimination methods Creating institutional and faculty resilience against toxic leadership Strategies to resolve toxic leadership actions that impede faculty innovation Preparedness to safeguard the faculty members

ART, SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY OF SAFEGUARDING

Educational Leaders and Administrators The need for outstanding leaders with integrity, ethics, humility, equity, and an excellent culture and environment arises.

Art of Safeguarding the Faculty Members Have an in-depth knowledge of the Constitution of India Recruitment and Service Rules of the Institute Retirement Benefits Pension Gratuity Vacations Workload per week Check the terms and Conditions Identify the Deviations and Discrepancies

Deducting Continuous Discrimination Observe the growth of Informal Academic Faculty Groups (IAFG) Deduct destructive actions Identify the obstructions, pitfalls, traps, deviations, etc. Check the traps created by the high-powered informal academic group (HPIAG) Deduct the unconstitutional obstructions created and the discrimination against you File an affidavit within the prescribed time limit at the Hon’ble High Court otherwise you will be booby-trapped .

Creating Institutional and Faculty Against Toxic Leadership The effects of toxic leadership create silent stressors, long-lasting, and debilitating as the more common workplace hazards ( Gary Winn and Ava Dykes, 2017) Morale suffers all around and everyone suffers under the dark cloud of poor leadership Good organizational morale is a “force multiplier” that has been focused on being motivated leading to perseverance and presumably, imperative success at group tasks, especially under trying circumstances.

Leaders Responsibility Build high morale by developing faculty members’ proficiency Display confidence in themselves and others Offer faculty development programs on spiritual leadership Administer a self-evaluation instrument Introduce appreciative inquiry Suggest self-directed improvements in their performance Recognize the improvements and apprec iate

Strategies to Resolve Toxic Leaders’ Discriminations against Well-Performing Faculty Teams ( Lilly Abdulrahman Mohamed, 2021) Open and transparent communication Sustained counseling and training Team-work Distributed leadership Joint decision making Incentive and review process

Resolving Toxic Actions Analyze the consequences of toxic actions Maintain detailed discrepancies created Analyze and submit an error-free grievance report to the Grievance Redressal Commission and the Board of Governors Seek assistance from the Board Members Submit an advanced copy of your grievance to the Ministry of Education If there is no action, submit a writ petition under your constitutional rights before the Hon’ble High Court through legal counsel who specializes in service matters

Science of Generating Knowledge Capital Read the advancements in your field online and offline courses Enroll in appropriate national and international professional organizations Participate in the conferences and workshops organized by them Publish papers at these conferences Publish Textbooks, Design, and Drawing Manuals, Laboratory Manuals, Item Banks, and Case studies Prepare multimedia learning packages Plan interdisciplinary research projects for research scholars

Science of Generating Human Capital Guide industry-sponsored research projects as dissertations for graduate students Offer executive development programs for national companies Offer diverse global faculty development programs Bid for institutional development projects under International Development Agencies Offer online executive development programs Publish training packages for companies Be a counselor, coach, and mentor

Business Plan

Business Plan and Revenue Generation Generate revenue through print materials publication Choose the best and reputed publishers Check the royalty received periodically Update the materials based on the revised curricula Develop monographs, publish, and sell through Amazon Develop multimedia learning packages Generate adequate course fees for training the employees of companies Offer industry-specific and sponsored long-term courses

Avoid Booby Traps Beware of booby traps in the sponsored consultancy projects Never undertake unapproved development programs After the contract period is over, update the training program materials and publish them as case studies Include intellectual properties and patent them Generate translated materials and publish them in other countries Try to get leave at your credit for undergoing advanced courses Always complete the projects ahead of the deadline

Ultimate Survival Method Have an in-depth knowledge of Service and Recruitment Rules AICTE Standards, Norms, and Directions Prepare a business plan Prepare your portfolio Update periodically Apply for Internships offered by IDAs, Bilateral Programs, and Global Universities Avail travel grants offered by AICTE

Counselors, Coaches, and Mentors Seek the advice of counselors while planning bids Avail the service of coaches while planning internships Get mentoring from the best senior professors who can be trusted Form a team of coworkers for projects Complete the accounts of externally funded projects Submit the account and claim an eligible project gain
