Asia: Climate and Natural vegetation Made by: Enamul H

Learning O bjectives: Key Terms Climate Factors Affecting Climate Winter and Summer Season , [Activities] Rainfall Distribution Types Of Climate [Activities] Natural Vegetation And Wildlife [Activities]

Key terms: China type of climate : s ummers are warm and winters are cold; rainfall occurs mainly during summers; winters also experience some rainfall Equatorial forests : dense evergreen forests and hardwood trees with board- leafed tree species Mediterranean climate : summers are very hot and dry and winters are cool and wet; rainfall is moderate and usually occurs in the form of short, heavy showers in winters Tundra climate or arctic climate : winters are extremely cold and long and summers are very short and cool

Climate: The climate of Asia varies from on region to the other. Variations are also found from season to season. This, in turn, affects the vegetation and wildlife of the continent t here are some factors which affect the climate

Factors Affecting Climate: There ae several factors that affect the climate Asia. These are as follows: Size And Latitudinal Extent Nearness To The Sea Relief Features Winds Ocean Currents

Size And Latitudinal Extent: Asia is the largest continent in the world. It has great extent from east to west. Its vast latitudinal extent stretches across the three heat zones – the torrid, the temperature and the frigid zones. So, its climate ranges from hot in the south to cold in the north.

Nearness To The Sea: Some parts of land are far away from the seas and oceans. The sea, therefore, does not have a moderation influence on them. So, they experience extreme climate. The places close to the seas enjoy equable or maritime climate.

Relief Features: Asia has many mountain ranges including the Himalayas. They extend in an east-west direction. They act as ran barriers to the onshore moisture-bearing winds from the south. These also prevent the cold wind of the north from entering the country.

Winds: Monsoon is the most important wind of Asia. It causes rainfall over major parts of the continent. It blows onshore during summer, as a result, heavy rainfall takes. During the winter season, it blows offshore. So, it give no or very little rainfall. Polar winds or Arctic winds blow into the north of Asia from polar areas. They are bitterly cold winds.

Ocean Currents: The cold Oyashio and warm Kuroshio ocean currents affect the temperature of the costal regions of Japan.

Winter Season: October to mid-march is the winter season. The sun shines over the southern hemisphere during this period. Central Asia is at a great distance from the seas. So, it becomes extremely cold. The temperature, here, drops below the freezing point.

Summer Season: The summer season in Asia stretches from mid-march to September. The rays of the sun fall directly over the northern hemisphere during this time. In J une the sun shines over head at the tropic of cancer. This makes Asia very hot

Rainfall Distribution: Rainfall in Asia is unevenly distributed. He equatorial region, the southern side of the Himalayas and the coastal areas of south-east Asia are heavy rainfall areas. They receive more than 200cm of rainfall India, south-east Asia, central and southern China, Japan and Philippines are the moderate rainfall areas. They receive rainfall between 100 and 200 cm. The south-central Asia, west Asia, Siberia and the plateaus of the Central Highlands are low rainfall areas. They receive less than 50 cm rainfall.

Activity Polar winds are bitterly _______ winds. -Cold The ______ season in Asia stretches from M id-march to September. -Summer Any one factor affecting climate. Size and latitudinal extent, nearness to the seam relief features, winds ocean currents Asia is the _______ continent. -largest October to mid-March is the _______ season. -winter

Types Of Climate: Asia experiences mainly ten type of climate. They are as follows: Equatorial Climate Monsoon Climate Tropical Desert Climate Mid-latitude Desert Climate Mediterranean Climate Temperate Grassland Climate [Steppes Climate] China Type Of Climate Manchurian Type Of Climate Taiga Climate [Cold Temperature Climate] Tundra Climate [Arctic Climate]

Equatorial Climate: It is hot humid climate. Equatorial climate is experienced in countries located between 10°N and 10° latitudes. These include Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri lanka and the southern part of Philippines. These countries have high temperature, about 30°C throughout the year.

Monsoon Climate: Monsoon climate is found in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, southern Pakistan, Sri-lanka, china and the parts of Philippines In monsoon climate, summers are hot and wet while winters are cool and dry. They have a clear rainy season.

Tropical Desert Climate Tropical desert climate is found in the Thar Desert of India and Pakistan and the Arabian desert of Saudi A rabia. The temperatures of the day and night vary greatly here. This is due to the rapid heating of land during the day and cooling at night Winters are cool and summers are hot. The rainfall is scanty in tropical desert climate.

Mid-latitude Desert Climate Mid-latitude desert climate is found in the Plateau of Tibet, Gobi desert and Mongolia. In mid-latitude desert climate, the summers are very hot and winters are very cold

Mediterranean Climate Mediterranean climate is found in the countries bordering Mediterranean seas in parts of turkey, Israel, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon. In Mediterranean Climate summers are v ery hot and dry and winters are cool and wet

Temperate Grassland Climate [Steppes Climate ] Temperate Grassland Climate also known as Steppes Climate is found in Mongolia and the Caspian sea region of Russia. In Temperate Grassland Climate, winters are cold and summers are warm

China Type of Climate China type of climate is found in the eastern coastal parts of Asia, North Korea, South Korea and Central and northern Japan In China type of climate summers are warm and winters are cold

Manchurian Type Of Climate Manchurian type of climate is found in Northern parts of Japan and North East China in this type of climate summers are short and warm whereas winters along and cold

Taiga Climate [Cold Temperature Climate ] Taiga climate is also called the cold temperature climate. It is found in the sub Arctic region of North Siberia In this type of climate winters are cold and long while summers are warm and short

Tundra Climate [Arctic Climate] Tundra climate is also called Arctic climate. It is found in the regions beyond The Arctic circle . In this type of climate winters are extremely cold and long while summers are very short and cool

Brainstorm activity This type of climate is experienced in countries located between 10°N and 10°S latitudes. -Equatorial Climate This type of climate is found in the Arabian Desert of Saudi Arabia. -Topical Desert Climate This type of climate is found in the plateau of Tibet, Gobi Desert and Mongolia. -mid-latitude Desert Climate This type of climate is found in Mongolia and the Caspian Sea of Russia. -Temperate Grassland Climate This type of climate is also called the cold temperate climate. -Taiga Climate This type of climate is also called the Arctic climate. -Tundra Climate

Natural Vegetation And Wildlife: Asia has a wide variety of climate. Therefore, it has a great variety of vegetation and wildlife species. The vegetation, here, ranges from thick evergreen rainforest in the equatorial region to lichen and moss in the tundra region. The main types of natural vegetation ae as follows: Equatorial Forests Monsoon Forests Desert Forests Mediterranean Forests Steppes Temperature Forests Taiga Forests Tundra Vegetation

Equatorial Forests Dense evergreen forest and hardwood trees with broad leaves from the equatorial forest These are found mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines These forests are slightly different from the rainforests of the Amazon and Zaire basins. The main hardwood trees are mahogany, rosewood, ebony, coconut, cinchona and rubber.

Monsoon Forests Monsoon forests are found in south-east and south Asia. These are called monsoon forests or tropical deciduous forests. These forests are found in areas that receive at least 150 cm of rain per year. They can be either tropical or temperate areas.

Desert Forests Desert vegetation is found in central and south-west Asia. Central Asia is a cold desert while south-west Asia is a hot desert. Due to harsh climatic conditions, the vegetation is scarce in these areas. Only thorny bushes, shrubs, cacti and clumps of dry grasses are found in these deserts. Date palms are found in the oases . The animals found here include Bactrian camels, mules, horses, gazelles, insects and lizards.

Mediterranean Forests Mediterranean forests are found in the regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea. In West Asian countries, such as Syria, Turkey, Israel and Lebanon, Mediterranean forests are found. These areas are drought-prone so the plants and trees have long roots and spongy barks. Laurel, acacia, oak, chestnut, walnut and olive are the common trees of these forests . Wildlife is not much due to moderate rainfall. Domesticated animals such as cattle, donkeys and sheep are found here.

Steppes Steppes are also called temperate grasslands. These are chiefly found in the east of the Caspian Sea and in Mongolia. The steppes have short grasses and low bushes.

Temperature Forests Temperate forests are found in the north-eastern parts of Asia. These are mixed forests. They include both deciduous and evergreen trees. The chief trees found here are oak, camphor and camellia . The main animals and birds are monkeys, apes, foxes, cranes and pheasants.

Taiga Forests Taiga forests are found in the central part of Siberia. Here, coniferous trees are found. They are evergreen softwood trees. They do not shed all their leaves at the same time, in any season. They are conical in shape and have needle-like leaves. So, they are called coniferous. The main trees are pine, fir, larch spruce and cedar. The trees found in these forests are tall and straight.

Tundra Vegetation Tundra vegetation is found along the northern coast of Asia. This area is covered with snow for nearly eight to nine months with permanently frozen subsoil. Tundra region is devoid of forests as the climate does not permit the growth of trees. Only lichens, mosses and some grasses are found along the water courses. Polar bears, reindeers, foxes, seals and walruses are common animals of this region.

Easier activities “T/F” (try answer those who didn’t) Rainfall in Asia is unevenly distributed. -True The southern side of the Himalayas and the costal areas of south-east Asia receive heavy rainfall. -True Mostly arboreal or tree-dwelling animals are found in Mediterranean forests. -False The rainfall is scanty in tropical climate. -True Date palms are found along the north-western coast of Asia. -false
