President, Olympic Council
of Malaysia
Ir gives me great pleasure to express a few
words inthis souvenir book of the
Malaysian Contingent to the 9th Asian
Games, 1982. Malaysia has been a constant
supporter of the Asiad movement. We have
participated in the Asian Games since 1954
and ever since then our continuous
Participation in it has reflected this great
“sport.
“As for the athletes the Asian Games is an
arena for them to strive their best in
competition. Success achieveduil
undoubtedly heightened the nation’s image.
Nevertheless we should not forget that it is
also in this arena of competition that we
can strengthen the bonds of friendship and
solidarity between the youths of Asia
Those of us assembled in New Delhi are
also committed to the conviction as
expressed in the Asiad motto “Ever
Onward" This is more so and true if viewed
in the contexts of the development of
international sports today, where standards
are getting higher in terms of performance.
Qn this note, I wish to urge every member
the Contingent to compete with all their
energy and abilities with a strong sporting
spirit t0 strive for succes.

MALAYSIAN sporting public's attention is being
focussed on New Delhi, India’s capital its, which
ora brief period wil also become the sports capital
of Asia
For 17 days from Nov 19, Malaysia's best sport
men, champions in their respective disciplines, will
Join some 2,500 athletes from 32 countries to vie
“For honours in true sporting sprit atthe ninth Asian
Games.
Will the 99 men and 28 women who carry
Malaysia challenge in 12 sports at the Games pro-
vide enough for ther fellow Malaysians back home
to cheer and follow, or wil they be lost along the
way of sporting success?
Frankly speaking one cannot view very hopeful-
ly of our chances of doing anything wonderful at
‘the Games. Miracles may be needed for something
spectacular there, but miracle in sports do not hap-
pen easily
Can our gladiators bring back anything near the
seven golds, five silver and six bronze medals that
their compatriots did a the fifth Games at Bangkok
in 1966, or more than the three bronze medals
returned by the 33 athletes who competed at the
‘third Games at Tokyo in 1958.
Those three bronze medals were Malaysia's first
‘medal collection from the Asian Games. Malaysia
(hen Malaya) did not compete at the frst Games,
also held at New Delhi in 1951, while a team of four
men and four women offered a token challenge at
‘the second Games at Manila in 1954.
Here M. Horichandra made his exit after
finishing third in the 400m heat in 51.6, while the
a
4x400m relay team of Harichandra, M.
Balakrishnan, Cletus Gomes and Michael Parry
‚finished Sieh in the final In 3:24.4. The relay was
‘won by Japan in 3:17.4.
The women's sprint relay quartet of Fay Siebe,
Carmen Koelmeyer, Maureen Siebel and Annie
Choong also finished fifth in the final in $0.7. In
dia won in 49.5, followed by Japan (49.6) and the
Philippines (50.4).
‘Malaysian sports have not looked back since
those first eager steps were taken by the eight
pioneer athletes and in the years that followed,
‘Malaysia have shown their flag at the next five
“Asian Games fora total harvest of 16 gold medals,
12 silver and 32 bronze medals.
Nothing really very much to shout about, but the
reports from everywhere have been reason
good. Malaysian teams have conducted themsb Es
With dignity and often with distinerion both on ands
off the sporting arena.
Rahim Ahmad brought us our first Asian Games
‘medal from athletics (he main provider of medals
from the Games) — a bronze in the 400m when he
inished third (48.8) behind India’s Indian Express
‘Milkha Singh (47.0) and Fino Pablo Jombilingo-
Weighthifier Tan Kim Beng lifted a ‘bronze’ in
the middleweight and Gladys Loke and Katherine
Leong claimed rhe other Bronze from women's
doubles in tennis.
Jakarta 1962 saw Malaysia strike gold in the
Asian Games with Mani Jegathesan winning the
200m in record time and badminton aces Ne Boon
‘Bee and Tan Yee Khan capturing the doubles tes.
Young Jega, Malaysia's ace of pace, returned four
years later to Bangkok in 1966 10 win the 100m and
200m and run first leg of the 4x100m winning team
‘and included Tambu Krishnan, Guna Rajalingam
‘and Mohamed Ariffin.
That was not all. There was big Nashatar Singh
and Meilva Rajamani who won the javelin and
400m respectively to bring Malaysia their richest
haul of 5-3-4.
They made Maleysia's name big in Asian
athletics. Je was not at all bad going for the strug-
alers of 1958.
ey
Boiin Bee and Yee Khan struck gold again and so
did Teh Kew San and Rosalind Singha Ang in the
badminton mixed doubles, They helped in our big-
gest Games collection of 7-56
Our athletic fortune went down the slope when
we went back to Bangkok in 1970, winning only two
Bronze medals. But where our track and feld stars
Jailed, our eyclsts rode out strongly to return with
‘wo gold medals through the great efforts of Daud
Ibrahim (1,600m massed start) and Ng Joo Ngan
(200km individual massed start)
Handsome Punch Gunalan weighed in with the
‘men’s singles gold medal and then he joined Boon
‘Bee 10 capture the men’s doubles gold as well. Boon
Bee also shared a second gold in winning the mix-
‘ed doubles with Sylvia Ng.
We went with a small team of 61 to the Teheran
Games in 1974 — for eight sports — and returned
sadly without no gold to show. At best, Ishtiag
Mubarak high-hurdled fora silver medal and pony-
tailed Junaidak Aman a broze from the women's
400m.
Football, hockey and shooting teams contributed
three more bronze medals to our total 1974 Games
tally of 0-1-4.
The outlook was a wee bit brighter at the last
Games at Bangkok in 1978 when Saik Oik Cum very
lesantly surprised us ail by winning the women’s
400m (55.09) and the 10-pin bowlers of Edward
Lim, B.S. Nathan, Holloway Cheah, Allan Hooi
‘and J.B. Khoo claiming the team event with a total
in-fall of 5,763, ahead of Thailand and South
Korea.
So now it willbe against this not-100-bad setting
that our young men and women will pit their
courage, strength and skill against their fellow
