ART OF MESOPOTAMIA The art of Mesopotamia has survived in the archaeological record from early hunter-gatherer societies on to the bronze age cultures of the sumerian , akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian empires. These empires were later replaced in the iron age by the Neo-Assyrian and Neo- Babylonian empires. Widely considered to be the cradle of civilization, Mesopotamia brought significant culture developments, including the oldest examples of writing.
The main emphasis was on various, very durable, forms of sculpture in stone and clay; little painting has survived but that painting was mainly used for geometrical and plant based decorative schemes, though most sculptures were also painted.
ASSYRIAN PERIOD An Assyrian artistic style distinct from that of Babylonian art, which was the dominant contemporary art in Mesopotamia. The Assyrians developed a style of extremely large schemes of very finally detailed narrative low reliefs in stone or alabaster, and originally painted, for places. Predominance is given to animal forms, particularly horses and lions, which are magnificently represented in great detail.
SUMERIANS =)Sumer was concentrated in the cities of Ur, Eridu and Uruk in Mesopotamia. =)The sumerian built temples on top of vast ziggurats and also vast, elaborately decorated places. =)The Sumerians, like the ancient Egyptians who were more or less their contemporaries, believed in an afterlife,and their tombs were well furnished with art, furniture and other items to prepare them for the next world.
BABYLONIAN Babylon come to artistic prominence in the 6 th century BC,when it flourished under king Nebuchadnezzar II. He built the garden of Babylon, a series of terraced gardens. A Babylonian relief sculpture of a bull made of brightly glazed tiles on the restored Ishtar gate.
NEO-BABYLONIAN PERIOD The walls surrounding the entrance way are decorated with rows of large relief animals in glazed brick, which has therefore retained its colors. Loins, Bulls and dragons are represented. Large wooden gates, throughout the period were strengthened, with large metal bands,often decorated with reliefs, several of which have survived.
ASSYRIA IN THE AKKADIAN EMPIRE AND NEO- SUMERIAN EMPIRES The akkadian -speaking semites of Mesopotamia came to rule an empire encompassing not only Mesopotamia itself but large swathes of asia minor,ancient iran etc. The akkadian empire was destroyed by economic decline and internal civil war, followed by attacks from barbarian gutian people in 2154 BC.
