About This Presentation

Atoms consist of three basic particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus (center) of the atom contains the protons (positively charged) and the neutrons (no charge). The outermost regions of the atom are called electron shells and contain the electrons (negatively charged).

ATOMS INSIDE OUT ATOMIC STRUCTURE

Thomson’s Model of an Atom Rutherford’s Nuclear Model of an Atom

WHAT IS ATOM? are the building blocks of matter that make up everything that exists in our world. Democritus, a Greek philosopher atom from the Greek word atomos , meaning indivisible.

The Subatomic Particles Proton (p+) Electron (e-) Neutron (n0)

has an electric charge of positive one (+1), and it is said to be stable by itself. It is fairly heavy particle and resides in the dense nucleus of an atom. p + e - has an electric charge of negative one (-1). Electrons are much smaller than neutrons and protons. They are found revolving somewhere outside the nucleus since its mass is approximately 1/1,837 of the mass of proton. n Has no net electric charge. Both proton and neutron make up the nucleus of an atom. Thus, these particles are collectively known as nucleons . The nucleus is located at the center of an atom. ALMOST ALL OF THE MASS IN AN ATOM COMPRISED THE PROTONS AND NEUTRONS IN THE NUCLEUS
