WILDLIFE OF GANGA BRAHMAPUTRA BASIN There is a variety of wildlife in the basin. Elephants, tigers, deers and monkeys are common .The one –horned rhinoceros is found in the brahmaputra plain. In the delta area ,Bengal tiger, crocodiles and alligators are Aquatic life bounds in the fresh river waters, the lakes and the Bay of Bengal Sea. The most popular varieties of fish are the rohu , catla and hilsa . Fish and rice is the staple diet of the people living in the area.
VEGETATION IN GANGA BRAHMAPUTRA The Ganga - Brahmaputra Basin has rich and varied natural vegetation. Tropical decidious forests are found in the plain region of the basin . Some main species of trees are teak , sal and peepal .Thick bamboo grows in the Brahmaputra plain. The deltaic regions like the sunderbans in the Ganga - Brahmaputra Basin are covered with Mangrove Forests which can survive both in salty and fresh waters. At higher altitudes in the mountainous regions covering the states of Sikkim , Uttaranchal and Arunachal Pradesh, coniferous forests are found. Some species of the coniferous forests are found here are Pine , Deodar and Fir.
WILDLIFE OF AMAZON BASIN - MAMMALS : More than 1,400 species of mammals are found in the Amazon, the majority of which are species of bats and rodents . Its larger mammals include the jaguar , ocelot , capybara , puma and South American tapir . - B IRDS : About 1500 bird species inhabit the Amazon Basin . The biodiversity of the Amazon and the sheer number of diverse bird species is given by the number of different bird families that reside in these humid forests. - REPTILES : The green anaconda inhabits the shallow waters of the Amazon and the emerald tree boa and boa constrictor live in the Amazonian tree tops. Many reptiles species are illegally collected and exported for the international pet trade. Live animals are the fourth largest commodity in the smuggling industry after drugs, diamonds and weapons. - AMPHIBIANS : More than 1,500 species of amphibians swim and are found in the Amazon. Unlike temperate frogs which are mostly limited to habitats near the water, tropical frogs are most abundant in the trees and relatively few are found near bodies of water on the forest floor.
VEGETATION IN AMAZON BASIN The Amazon vegetation , covering much of north western Brazil and extending into Colombia , Peru and other South American Countries , is the world’s largest tropical rainforest , famed for its biodiversity . It’s crisscrossed by thousands of rivers , including the powerful Amazon . River towns , with 19 th -century architecture from rubber boom days , include Brazil’s Manaus and Belem and Peru’s Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado.
LIFE OF PEOPLE IN AMAZON BASIN People grow most of their food in small areas after clearing some trees in the forest . While men hunt and fish along the rivers , women take care of the crops. Life of the people in Amazon basin is slowly changing . In the older days the heart of the forest , could be reached only by navigating the river . In 1970 the Trans accessible . Aircrafts and helicopters are also used for reaching various places . The indegenious population was pushed out from the area and armed forced to settle in new areas where they continued to practice their distinctive way of farming.
LIFE OF PEOPLE IN GANGA -BHRAHMAPUTRA BASIN - Agriculture is taken up as the main occupation of people in ganga brahmaputra basin where flat land is available to grow crops. The main crop is paddy. The staple diet of the people is fish and rice. Since it requires sufficient water, it is grown in areas where rainfall is high. The other crops that are grown include wheat, maize, millet and gram. Cash crops such as sugarcane and jute are also grown. Tea plantations are found in West Bengal and Assam. Crops are grown on the terraces of the hills that have gentle slopes. - Some people live in thatched houses shaped like beehives. Apartment – like houses called ‘ Malcoa ’ with a steeply slanting roof are also found. With passage of time, the life of the people of this area is slowly changing. Previously, navigating through the river was the only means to reach the heart of the rainforest. But the Trans Amazon highway was made in 1970. It made all parts of the rainforest accessible. Aircrafts and helicopters are used to reach all previously inaccessible places. The indigenous people were forced to relocate where they continued with their distinctive way of farming .
