About Aurangabad(Biahr)District
Aurangabad is a district located in south western part of Bihar.Prior to 1973 Aurangabad was a
subdivision of Gaya District. It acquired the status of an independent district in the year 1973 as a
result of reorganisation of district boundaries. It has a rich heritage and close linkage with its parent
district (Gaya).
Location
Aurangabad is located in north east India on theNH-19 (Grand Trunk Road) at its crossing with
NH-139 & NH-120. Its nearest large town is Gaya 70 kilometres (43 mi) in the east. The capital of
Bihar, Patna is 140 kilometres (87 mi) to the north east.
The district is bounded on the north by Arwal district and on the east by Gaya district, on the south
by part of Gaya district of this State and Palamu district of the Jharkhand state and on the west by
the districts of Rohtas.

2. Area
Aurangabad rests on alluvial plain spread in area of about 3305 Sq Km and most of area of the
district not irrigated.
This district is very drought prone.
Connectivity
The famous Grand Chord Railway Line & Eastern dedicated freight corridor passes through the
district. The Major Railway stations of district are Son-Nagar Junction(SEB), Anugrah Narayan
Road(AUBR) & Rafiganj(RFJ).
The Historic Grand Trunk Road(NH-19), NH-139, NH-120, SH-11,SH-68 are the major roads of
the district.
The Gaya International Airport is the nearest airport.
Administrative setup of District
The district headquarter Aurangabad and Daudnagar are the major towns & the block headquarters
are the small towns of the district.
There are about 1847 villages in district.

History
The history of Aurangabad is part of the history of the ancient empire of Magadha which included
the undivided districts of Patna and Gaya. Three-fourth of India’s early history is the history of
Magadha and the area which forms the present district of Aurangabad was a proud sharer of this
glory.
The young boy of Obra town Amar Saheed Jagatpati Kumar Who laid his life on the altar of mother
land during the freedom movement of the year 1942. He along with six other were killed by the
Britishers on 9th August 1942, while hoisting tricolour flag on the old secretariat building at state
capital Patna.
Rivers in Aurangabad: Son, Punpun, Bataane, Morhar, Madar are the major rivers of Aurangabad.
Canals In Aurangabad: Son Canal-A barrage has been built across the Son river neat Dehri from
where two canals have been taken out. The eastern canal taking off at Barun was completed in
1875. This 130 km long canal is called Patna canal which irrigates about 3 lakh hectares of land in
Patna, Gaya and Aurangabad districts.

3. Demography of Aurangabad
The total population of district is about 2,540,073 where as number of males are 1,318,684 &
number of females are 1,221,389.
The population density of the district is 769 persons per Sq Km.
There are 926 females over 1000 males.
The literacy rate of district is 70.32%( Male 80.11% & Female 59.71%)
Industrial status of Aurangabad District
Aurangabad has an agrarian economy. It lies in drought prone area so there are no any major agro-
industries in the district.The main crops are rice, wheat, gram, lentil & rapeseed.
Other industries are Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Plant, Shree Cement Factory, Maa
Mundeshwari cycle factory, Carpet industry, Blanket Industry, Brassware industry are some of the
industries of the district.
A.Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Plant
The Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project (also known as the New Nabi Nagar Project) is a
1,980-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station under development in Bihar, India.
B. Shree Cement Factory
Shree cement factory is a factory of leading cement company Bangur group whose manufacturing
facility is located in this district. Empowering the youth of the state through employment
generation.

Block Obra and its adjoining areas under the district of Aurangabad had been the excellent centre of

magic of weaver’s fingers here reflects the same fineness and spirituality of Iranian carpets which is
often seen in the carpets of Bhadohi and of some other centres.

4. E. Blanket Industry
Obra and its adjoining area is also famous for its blanket and woolen products. But Nowadays due
to negligence of government toward this area leads to very poor performance of this industry.
F. Brassware Industry
There are large number of families in Daudnagar area which are making utensils of brass and other
metals from very old time. This industry is handled by a certain families of this area. The industry
fulfils the local demand of brassware. Their is a lot of potential for this industry because this
industry run on their own by locals without any government support.
Status of Agriculture in District
Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of Aurangabad district they mainly grows paddy,
wheat & pulses.
In recent time a lot of development work is done in the field of agriculture which leading to
increasing of per capita income of the district. Some major agricultural aspects are discussed below.
The Vegetable Cultivation
The area beside the bank of Son river and Punpun river is famous for its cucurbitaceous vegetable
production & The area adjacent to the Gaya district are major producers of various type of
vegetables which are also exported to the national levels by the means of railways.
The Strawberry story
Brijkishore Mehta sowed the seeds of change in Chilhaki Bigha when he planted seven strawberry
saplings. The idea came about when he asked his son Guddu Kumar what work he did as a migrant
worker in Haryana. He learnt that his son worked in a strawberry farm in Hisar, where the land and
climate were similar to that of their village.
“Though I didn’t know what a strawberry looked like, I decided to grow them, so that my son could
make a living in our village itself,” Brijkishore said. He approached Krishi Vigyan Kendra,
Aurangabad to learn about strawberry cultivation.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra officials directed him to Dr RPCAU in Pusa of Samastipur district, where
Brijkishore sought the advice of agricultural scientists. “When they said strawberry cultivation was
not possible in Bihar, I was upset and disappointed,” he said.
Undeterred, Brijkishore and his son met farmers in Hisar. The seven plants that they brought back in
2013 eventually became 500. Mehta, in his 50s, is happy that his experiment proved successful.

This strawberry story started a movement in near by areas for various other export demanded fruits
in areas.
Mushroom Cultivation
By the help of KVK Aurangabad & KVK Gaya the marginal farmers of this area are cultivating
button & oyster mushroom and they market it in Varanasi & New Delhi by the rail means.

5. Potential of District
Aurangabad is the land of Banbhatta, Bihar vibhuti Anugrah Narayan Singh, Saheed Jagatpati
Kumar and many other legends. As it is mostly drought prone the availability of irrigation water
opens new possibilities of this underdeveloped area of Bihar.
This area have also vast potential for heavy industries in Bihar as it is well connected by rail
through Grand chord rail line & Eastern dedicated freight corridor and it is well connected through
road as Grand Trunk road passes through the district.
The first ever proposed expressway The North South Corridor of Bihar is starting from the district.
The connectivity of this district opens tons of possibilities of development.
The attitude of the state a well as the central government towards the developmental aspects of this
region is neglected from the time of independence so the various development project leads to the
opening various dimension of development.
The vast area of district is drought prone. The awaiting Mandal Dam & Koel Canal projects will
irrigate the area & colouring the economy in green colour.
The connectivity of this area avails the passage of one of the biggest markets of the nation.
Future prospects of Aurangabad
The future of this district is very bright in the both agriculture & industrial field. As the Honourable
CM project Har Khet Me Paani Yojna will opens a new dimension of agriculture in this area as the
fields of area are very under-utilised .
This district have also very bright future in industries due to connectivity, water availability,
electricity availability and other various suitable things for establishment of heavy industries in this
area.
