INSTALLATION OF AN AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) IN ACCORDANCE WITH FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17

z AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Description: It is a combination of: solar panel barometer rainfall gauge, and Advanced Remote Data Acquisition Unit (ARQ) (also developed by ASTI) which can transmit data to a server within a set time interval.

z AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Advanced Remote Data Acquisition Unit (ARQ) Developed by DOST- Advance Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) The Advanced Remote Data Acquisition unit  ( arQ )  is a data logging solution that currently serves as the controller for the remote monitoring stations such as AWS, ARG, WLMS currently deployed nationwide. a technology that can transmit data from the sensor saved in the ARQ then sent to a server through a sim card within a set time interval

z AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Uses: - It is an instrument with multi-parameter sensor that measures air temperature, relative humidity and pressure, rainfall, wind speed and direction, and solar radiation. - It measures real time or on-site data storage, consumes low power, transmits data automatically, and is low maintenance.

z AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) SOURCE: https://mirror.pia.gov.ph/news/2022/09/15/dost-installs-third-automated-weather-station-in-ilocos-sur Purpose: - This aims to capacitate the communities through generation of timely weather data for preparedness and resiliency during occurrence of natural hazards. - This will also help the community in monitoring the weather conditions, provide crop advisories, create predictions, and formulate plans for a more resilient community.

z AUTOMATED WEATHER STATION (AWS) SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Site Requirements: It must be installed in open areas with minimal obstructions (i.e. buildings, trees etc.) and with consistent signal reception.

z GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTRUMENTATION SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Prior to installation, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Local Government Unit , and concerned agencies (e.g. Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office) should be drafted to build accountability from different agencies ensuring maximum security on the installed instruments. Also, construction of fences around the instruments is necessary. The fences can vary as long as data gathering is not blocked and no obstructions are present.

z GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTRUMENTATION SOURCE: FOREST MANAGEMENT BUREAU (FMB) TECHNICAL BULLETIN NO. 17 Once the AWS is installed; a technical personnel, preferably an Information Technology or Computer Science expert, should facilitate the configuration to ascertain the instruments’ efficiency and sim card reception to transmit data to the data logger. Preferably, a centralized website per region at the Conservation Development Division should be created containing the watersheds with automated weather and water level monitoring stations wherein data collected by the instruments within specific real time interval will be projected and accessed by the public through the internet.
