Importance of Audio-Visual Aids Instructional tools like books and black –board were thought to be sufficient in the beginning and apparently they served the purpose till human knowledge grew out of all proportions to be acquired by single person in his life. Educators came face to face with the problem of speeding up the process of imparting maximum amount of knowledge in shortest possible time AV can bring the world into the class room . The most abstract concepts can be presented in vivid concrete forms that are easily grasped by the learners .

Motivation is a power full force in the learning process. Since AV materials motivate and help learning , they are important in any scheme of educational activity, either formal or informal type. The teaching and learning process more interesting, more effective and more permanent . AV AIDS contribute directly in improving the effectiveness of learning, in teaching and training situations.

Merits Research shown AV AIDS help: The learner to (a) learn faster (b) to learn more (c) learn more thoroughly and (d) Remember longer. Systematic oder Clarity of ideas Impress ideas Vitalize and make teaching more real. Outside one’s own environment. Combat verbalism Overcome language barrier Attract and hold attention Arouse and sustain interest

11. Stimulate thinking and motivate action. 12. Change attitude or point of view 13. Save time

Limitations Learners may sometimes form mistaken or distorted impressions, unless AV are supplemented with required explanation. Temptation for teacher to narrow down his teaching to only a few big ideas, not giving the complete picture of subject. Some teacher acquire the mistaken idea that they have little to do when AV are used. Possible risk of “ spectatorism ”, instead of the attitude thoughtful enquiry.
