SPECIAL TEAMS PHILOSOPHY We want to force our opponents to crack under pressure by: Creating a long field for their offense (Kick-Off/Punt Team)! Creating a short field for our offense (Kick-Off Ret. / Punt Ret.)! Executing with great speed and ferocity in our coverage units! Executing with great technique and discipline in our return units! Taking chances to create turnovers or by blocking kicks or punts! We want force our opponents to spend extra time preparing for us: Keeping our schemes simple but look complex! Expect to make big plays at every opportunity: Create 2+ game altering plays in the kicking game! Play VERY disciplined in all phases of the kicking game: No foolish penalties that give our opponents a field position advantage! No turnovers that give our opponent an additional possession! No blocked kicks! Control the game: Win the hidden yardage and field position battle!
GENERAL INFORMATION SPECIAL TEAMS 1 PLAY SERIES A sizable amount of yardage is involved (usually 35 yards or more). There is a change of possession involved. Often a specific attempt to score points is involved ( PAT / FG attempt). Momentum of the game can be greatly impacted . WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR COACHES: Leadership and support Preparation We care about you! We will make decisions based on what is best for the team or the unit. GENERAL INFORMATION CHARACTERSITICS OF PLAYERS WITH SPECIAL TEAMS TALENT Intelligent – Understands and executes his job with minimal missed assignments! Great Competitor – Gives great effort and understands that EVERY REP MATTERS in practice and games! Unselfish – Gives his all for the betterment on the unit and the team! Plays at full speed – 100 MPH! Plays with great confidence in his ability to get the job done! Plays well in space and understands vertical/horizontal leverage! Plays with great balance and agility ! Exhibits some unique quality : -Can long or short snap with speed and accuracy. -Has sure hands to catch kick-offs and punts. -Has ability to make people miss and gain positive yards as a return man. -Has a knack for blocking punts. -Has a knack for getting to the ball and making tackles. -Is a great blocker who takes pride in his man not making a play on the ball.
GENERAL INFORMATION FILM STUDY Just like for offense and defense one of the most important preparation tools is film study. Film study is a key component to game day success. Through structured film study you can identify many key things about the opposition. Information on their strengths and weaknesses (both personnel and scheme) and subtle tips based on personnel idiosyncrasies can be gained. This information will allow you to be in anticipation mode rather than reaction mode on game day. This will enhance your chances for success, increasing your competitive advantage. Remember “the eye in the sky does not lie” use this tool to make you a better player. If film study is an integral part of your weekly preparation you will become a better player. GENERAL INFORMATION SCOUT TEAMS Just as important that YOU do film work! We need a “ PERFECT LOOK ” Makes no sense to show us something we won’t see on Saturday! YOUR performance on Scout Team today could get YOU on a special team on Saturday ! SPECIAL TEAMS STARTERS A Special Teams starter is anyone who is on 3 or more Special Teams who is not an Offense or Defensive starter. GAME DAY All decisions on game day concerning scheme adjustments, fakes, and substitutions has to be approved by the Head Coach and Coordinator. PLAYERS CAN NEVER TAKE THEMSELVES OUT OF THE GAME. In the case of an injury the trainer and coordinator will be in constant communication . EVALUATION Similar to Offense and Defense, Special Teams will be evaluated and graded.
