BASAL METABOLIC RATE(BMR) Ms.Anu Sebastian: B.Pharm ; M.Pharm Assistant Professor, Dept. Of Pharmacology Nirmala College Of Pharmacy Muvattupuzha,Ernakulam,Kerala

The basal metabolic rate may be defined as the energy required by an awaken individual during physical, emotional and digestive rest. It is the minimum amount of energy required to maintain life or to sustain the vital functions like working of heart, circulation, brain function, respiration etc. The normal BMR for an adult is fixed as 24Kcal/Kg body weight/day.

Factors affecting BMR Age: During the period of active growth, BMR is high. It reaches a maximum by five years of age.BMR is lowered in old age. Sex : Males have higher BMR than females. Environmental temperature: BMR increases in cold climate as a compensatory mechanism to maintain body temperature. Exercise : Due to increased cardiac out,BMR increases in exercise.

5)Starvation: It lowers BMR. 6)Fever: 12% increase in BMR is found in i.e rise in temperature. 7)Thyroid Hormones : BMR is raised in hyperthyroidism,as thyroid hormones have stimulant effect on rate of metabolism & heat production. Recording of BMR For the recording of BMR ‘Benedict-Roth Basal Metabolism Apparatus’ is used. The volume of oxygen consumed by the subject for a period of 2-6 minutes under basal conditions is determined. Procedure The person should be at physical & mental rest in the awaken state. The surrounding temperature should be comfortable approximately 25 degreee celsius .

The subject is asked to breath in through a mouthpiece of metal cylinder for 6 mins . The CO2 produced is absorbed in soda lime. The O2 present in the cylinder is utilized in the breath in process & the volume of O2 consumed is recorded.
