Basic Lubrication Training Program LUBRICATION BASICS

Our Company “ Renolube ” a brand under Degenai Teion is introduced as a experts choice lubricant to the technical world so that machines can function efficiently, sustainably and reliably without being noticeable by the customers. Just like clean and pure blood is a basic need of our body similarly a lubricant is a fundamental need of any machine to startup its operation. We have introduced our “ Renolube ” expert choice lubricant to meet the exact needs of our customers.

Basic Principle of Lubrication

Types of Lubricants

Common Base Oils

Synthetic Oils The major types of synthetic fluids that are mostly used in greases. Polyalphaolefins (PAO) Diesters Polyolesters Polyglycols Silicones Polyphenylether PPE Perfluoropolyether PFPE

Characteristics of Base Oils

Synthetic >Mineral Oils

Base Oil Viscosity What is base oil Viscosity ? Measure of Flowability of an oil at a particular temperature

ISO Viscosity Grades

Viscosity Index

Measuring Viscosity

Pour Point What is the Pour Point? Pour Point is the lowest temperature at which the oil will flow. Why is pour point important? Pour point will help determine the lowest temperature at which a particular lubricant will work. It is critical in low temperature applications

Pour Point Range OILS POUR POINT RANGE MINERAL -10 to 20 degree Celsius SYNTHETIC -40 to -60 degree Celsius ESTERS upto -70 degree Celsius

Flash & Fire Points Flash Point: Flash Point is the lowest temperature at which the lubricating oil gives off enough vapors that ignite for a moment when a tiny flame is brought near it. Fire point is the lowest temperature at which the vapors of the oil burn continuously for at least five seconds when a tiny flame is brought near it. This is normally about 50 ° C higher than Flash Point.

Evaporation loss What is Evaporation loss? Essential quality of a Grease to bleed over Time and at High Temperatures Range Why the test? This concerns with the life of lubrication effectiveness and contributes in evaluating the heat stability and life

Typical Grease Composition

Commonly used Gellants

Types of Additives

Penetration What is the penetration? Penetration is the consistency of the lubricating grease Why is penetration important? Harness or softness of the grease can play an important part in many applications and can lead to success of failure of the grease

NLGI Consistencies Gear Lubrication Plain and Roller Bearing Sealing & Barrier greases for labyrinth seals and taps

Dropping Point

Measuring dropping point

Dropping Points of Common Gellants Gellants Dropping Point Calcium Grease 71-99 Sodium Grease 135 – 177 Lithium Grease 177 – 204 Aluminium Complex Grease 210 – 220 Lithium Complex Grease 240 – 250 Calcium Sulphonate Grease +280 Bentone Grease None Silica Grease None

Copper Strip Corrosion T his test is designed to assess the relative degree of corrosivity of Petroleum Products and comparing it with ASTM Copper Strip Corrosion Standard. Rating: 1 a Excellent 4 c Poor

Shear Stability is a measure of the resistance of an oil to change in viscosity, caused by the oil being subjected to mechanical stress or shear. is determined by mechanical grease worker when subjected to 10K strokes 5% change Excellent 5.1 – 15 % change Good 15.1 – 30 % change Fair 30.1% + change Poor Shear Stability

Shear Stability

Bleed What is Bleed? Bleed is the separation of oil from a grease at a certain temperature. Why the test? Bleed is used for determining the tendency of oil separation under static conditions, and gives a useful measure of the stability and life of the grease.

Water Wash Out To evaluate the resistance of a lubricating grease to washout by water from a bearing Temperature : 80°C RPM : 600 ` Good is < 5% Poor > 10%

Four Ball EP Test ASTM D 2596 EP Properties of lubricating greases ASTM D 2266 Wear preventive properties of lubricating greases Why this test : To determine the load carrying capacity and wear resistance property of the grease

Factors Affecting Grease Performance

Major types of lubricating greases and their characteristics

Thickeners Base Oils Service temp Resistance to water Other Observation Sodium soap Sodium Mineral Oils -20 to 100 Not resistant Emulsifies with Water, may liquefy under some conditions Lithium soap Mineral Oils -30 to 120 Resistant Emulsifies with water, but gets softer. Multipurpose grease. Lithium complex Mineral Oils -30 to 140 Resistant Multipurpose grease with high thermal resistance. Calcium Soap Mineral Oils -20 to 70 Highly resistant Good sealing effect against water. Water that penetrated is not absorbed. Aluminium Soap Mineral Oils -20 to 70 Resistant Good sealing effect against water. Sodium Complex Soap Mineral Oils -30 to 160 Resistant upto approx 80 C Suitable for high temperture and loads.

Thickeners Base Oils Service temp Resistance to water Other Observation Calcium complex Mineral Oils -30 to 120 Highly resistant Mutipurpose Grease. Suitable for High Temp, Load and Speed.( Depending on base oil viscosity) Barium complex Mineral Oils -30 to 120 Highly resistant Suitable for High Temp, Load and Speed.( Depending on base oil viscosity) Steam resistant Polyurea Mineral Oils -20 to 160 Resistant Suitable for High Temp, Load and Speed Aluminium Complex Mineral Oils -30 to 140 Resistant Suitable for High Temp, Load and Speed Bentonite Mineral Oils or Ester Oils -20 to 160 Resistant Gel Grease. Suitable for high temp at low speeds

Thickeners Base Oils Service temp Resistance to water Other Observation Lithium Soap Ester Oils -60 to 120 Resistant Suitable for high speeds and low temp Lithium Complex Soap Ester Oils -50 to 160 Resistant Multigrade Lubricating grease for wide temp range Barium Complex soap Ester Oils -40 to 120 Resistant Suitable for high speeds and low temp. Steam resistant Calcium Complex Soap Ester Oils -50 to 140 Resistant Suitable for high speeds and low temp. Steam resistant Lithium soap Silicone Oils -60 to 160 Highly Resistant Suitable at high and low temp at low load and low to medium speeds.
