Basic First Aid BANDAGING TECHNIQUES

BANDAGING is used to: To support –fractured bone To immobilize – dislocated shoulder/jaw To apply pressure- stop bleeding and venous flow To secure dressing in place To retain splints in place

BANDAGING Bandages have three key uses: Applying pressure to bleeding wounds Covering wounds and burns Providing support and immobilization for broken bones, sprains and strains. Bandaging Techniques

Any PHYSICAL INJURY involving a BREAK IN THE LAYERS of the skin or other body tissue. WOUND

Classification of wounds Closed Wound Is a wound where the OUTER LAYER OF THE SKIN is INTACT, and the DAMAGE LIES BELOW the surface. Bandaging Techniques

Classification of wounds Open Wound The outer skin is broken The break in the skin can be minor or severe

General rule for all open wound Control bleeding Prevent infection Proper use of dressings and bandages Bandaging Techniques

Bleeding Internal External Bandaging Techniques

Types of Bandaging

Head Top Fold the base at least 2-3 inches Place folded base aligned with eyebrows Pull-back and cross-over at the back, tucking apex beneath Pull both ends in front/secure with a square knot at the center of the folded base/ tuck ends Pull down apex (tuck sides neatly at the cross-over area)

Cravat Bandage for Forehead Place the center of the cravat over the compress covering the wound Carry the ends around to the opposite side of the head, cross them. Bring them back to the starting point and tie them.

Cravat Bandage for the Cheek/Ears/Jaw Use the narrow cravat. Start with middle of the cravat over the compress covering the cheek or the ear. Carry one end over the top of the head and the other under the chin Cross the ends at the opposite side. Bring the short end back around the forehead and the long end around the back of the head. Tie them down over the compress.

EYE BANDAGE

Palm Bandage (Laceration)

Hand Bandage (BURN) Place the hand in the middle of the triangular bandage with the wrist at the base Place the apex over the fingers and tuck any excess material into the pleats on each side of the hand Cross the ends on top of the hand, take them around the wrist, and tie them with square knot
