Hipertensi adalah suatu keadaan ketika tekanan di pembuluh darah meningkat secara kronis . Hal tersebut dapat terjadi karena jantung bekerja lebih keras memompa darah untuk memenuhi kebutuhan oksigen dan nutrisi tubuh . Hipertensi sering dihubungkan dengan pengerasan dan hilangnya elastisitas dinding arteri . Tahanan vaskular perifer meningkat dalam pembuluh darah yang keras dan tidak elastis . Hal ini bisa dipengaruhi oleh faktor umur . Pada lanjut usia terjadi perubahan struktur dan fungsi pembuluh darah , yaitu sifat elastisitas pembuluh darah menjadi berkurang dan terjadinya kekakuan pada dinding pembuluh darah arteri , sehingga pengembangan pembuluh darah menjadi terganggu ( Potter&Perry , 2005 dalam Andari, 2025 ) .
