BICOL REGION T he Bicol Region is located in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago. 5.9% of the total land area of the country is in the region. Around 69.3% of the total land area is alienable and disposable while the remaining 30.7% is public forest areas. Physical Environment The southeastern volcanic region with Mayon volcano as the center is known as the BICOL PENINSULA . The line of volcanoes that make up the irregular northeast and east ranges includes from north to south Mt. Isarog , Mt. Iriga , Mt. Mayon , and Mt. Bulusan . The Peninsula has a very irregular form with deep and extensive coastal embayments and a long coastline.

Mount Bulusan, also known as Bulusan Volcano, is a stratovolcano on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Located in the province of Sorsogon in the Bicol Region, it is 70 kilometres southeast of Mayon Volcano and approximately 390 kilometres southeast of Manila.

The region has a heavy rainfall throughout the year and a fertile volcanic soil favorable to the growth of abaca and coconuts . However, it lies along the path of destructive typhoons. Bicol Region , is a diverse and picturesque area. It is characterized by rugged mountains, active volcanoes, and sprawling plains . The climate is tropical , with distinct wet and dry seasons , providing an ideal environment for agriculture and tourism.

ECONOMIC RESOURCES OF BICOL

The economy of the Bicol region is basically subsistence farming. ABACA The Abaca is planted in the volcanic soil near and on the slopes of the volcanoes of the region. The fibers of the self-sustaining Abaca are used in the production of handicraft products such as: handbags , hats , shoes , slippers , lamps , carpets , accessories , clothing , furniture , and wallcoverings .

CAMARINES NORTE

CAMARINES NORTE is a province in the Philippines situated in the Bicol Region occupying the southeastern peninsula of Luzon and the outlying island provinces of Masbate and Catanduanes. It has 12 towns and the capital is Municipality of Daet . The province has a land area of 2,277.93 square kilometers or 879.51 square miles. The total population of Camarines Norte is 95,572 people. Roman Catholic (Iglesia Católica) Rinconada Bikol or simply Rinconada Mount Labo , is a potentially active stratovolcano in the province of Camarines Norte. Camarines Norte derives its name from the Spanish word “camarin”, meaning rice granary or warehouse. Camarines Norte is famous for its Formosa - the sweetest pineapple. It is known for mining , jewelry craft , pineapple and coconut industry .

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS BAGASBAS BEACH One of the top surfing destinations in the Philippines. In February 2009 , Bagasbas hosted the First InternatiKiteboardingCompetition in the region.

FIRTS JOSE RIZAL MONUMENT The construction of the memorial marker started on December 30, 1898 and it was declared as a historical landmark in 1961 . Made of mortars and boulders from the demolished Old Spanish Jail in Daet where many patriots died, making it historically and culturally significant.

PABIRIK FESTIVAL (GOLD PANNING) The Pabirik Festival is celebrated every last week of January up to the day of town fiesta on the second day of February . Pabirik means “ pan ” which is a medium used by the natives of Paracale in gold panning.

CAMARINES SUR Camarines Sur or also called CamSur is the largest among the six provinces in the Bicol region in Luzon both in terms of population and land area. It is a hilly and mountainous with a flat central area known as the Bikol plain . Camarines Sur is home to the smallest fish in the world The dwarf goby ( pandaka pygmaea ) measures 1.2 centimeters or less than half an inch and famous for its Mt. Isarog. The total land area is 5,266.8 square kilometres 2,034 sq mi , it is the largest province in the Bicol Region. The province of Camarines Sur has a population of 2.07 million . Naga City, the former capital of Camarines Sur, was found in 1573 as Nueva Caceres namesake of the Province in Spain and among the original five royal cities of the colony. It comprises into 2 cities Naga City , the lone chartered city, while Iriga City , is a component city and 35 municipalities , the capital is Pili . The province's name has been derived from " camaronchones " or " camarines ", a Spanish word for “ kamalig ” referring to small nipa or bamboo-made huts by the natives.

ALBAY

ALBAY The province of Albay is generally mountainous with scattered fertile plains and valleys. The Land of the most perfect cone “ Mayon Volcano ”the symbol most associated with the province.it has two other major peaks: Mount Masaraga and Mount Malinao . Albay has a total land area of 2,554.06 square kilometers 986.13 square miles. The population of Albay has 1,374,768 people. Albay has 15 municipalities and 3 component cities Legazpi , Ligao and Tabaco : Capital Legaspi . Long before the Spaniards arrived, Albay had a thriving civilization. Formerly called Ibat , and then Libog , Albay was once ruled by Gat Ibal , an old chief who also founded the old barangay of Sawangan , now the district of Albayand part of the city of Legazpi. It was named after Miguel Lopez de Legazpi , the Spanish conquistador who came to the Philippines in 1565 and started the massive colonization.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS No other volcano in the world has a cone as perfectly shaped as Mayon. MAYON VOLCANO There have been 49 eruptions since the first documented activity in 1616, with the worst explosion occurring on February 1, 1814 and killing some 1,200 people in Cagsawa and Budiao . Like other volcanoes located around the Pacific Ocean , Mayon is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire .

Its capital is Sorsogon City (formerly the towns of and Bacon) and borders the province of Albay to the north. The name of the city is derived from the word " sosogon " meaning " trace the river by going upstream ".

CATANDUANES Catanduanes is an island province in the Philippines situated east off the Mainland Bicol of Luzon Archipelago. Catanduanes has a great deal to offer to guests with its varied blend of Spanish Colonial churches , waterfalls , waves perfect for surfing , and beaches that are still untouched even for most of the locals that whhy they called it “ The Happy Island ” It has a total population of 76,520 people. Catanduanes comprises of 11 municipalities and its capital is the Virac City . The highest and the most prominent mountain in Catanduanes is the Conical Peak.. Catanduanes' earliest recorded name was Isla de Cobos . One legend states that Catanduanes came from the word “ tandu ”, a native click beettle that was abundant throughout the island. “ Katanduan ” then was the reference made of this island. When the Spaniards came, it was corrupted from katanduan to Catanduanes. Because of its location, the province is usually the first place in the Philippines to get battered by typhoons, and so the province is nicknamed the “ Land of the Howling Winds .”

TOURISTS ATTRACTION MARIBINA FALLS It is one of the most popular and most accessible waterfalls in the province. The falls is about 5 meters high with marvellous gushing rapids of crystal clear waters.

LUYANG CAVE Luyang Cave is loacated at San Andress , it was the cave that the natives used as a refuge from the attacking Moro Pirates during the 17th century . The pirates uprooted several sili (red peppers)and some dried leaves at the entrance of the cave to suffocate the natives inside.
