FLUID MOSAIC MODEL OF PLASMA MEMBRANE SUBMITTED BY -PRIYANSHU SHARMA UID - 24MSC10039 SUBJECT -BIOLOGY SUBMITTED TO -Mrs SUJATA SAINI
Introduction and discovery The plasma membrane earlier called cell membrane( Nagelli and Cramer, 1855) and now called plasmalemma(Plowe,1931) it is a semipermeable outermost covering of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells it is responsible for transfer of material inside and outside the cell homeostasis . Electron micrograph of cell membrane-
DIAGRAM
CELL MEMBRANE AND ITS FUNCTIONS
IT MAINLY CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS
PHOSPHOLIPIDS HYDROPHILIC (POLAR) ON OUTER SIDE AND HYDROPHOBIC (NON-POLAR) ON INNER SIDE .THEY ALIGN THEMSELVES IN SUCH A WAY THAT WATER LOVING SIDE FACE TOWARDS WATER AND WATER HATING ONE TOWARDS OUTSIDE.
CHOLESTROL THIS SPECIAL THING IS MADE IN LIVER REGULATES THE FLUIDITY AND PERMIABILITY OF CELL MOLECULE AS IT CAUSES THE PHOSPHOLIPID TO STAY CLOSER TOGETHER
PROTEINS They are further of three types - INTEGRAL PROTEINS (To transport large molecules in either direction , PERIPHERAL PROTEINS (They are involved in some communication and transport and GLYCOPROTEINS (Play important role in cell recognition.)
