Natural vegetation and wildlife of
Andhra Pradesh

NATURAL VEGETATION
◦The total forest cover of Andhra Pradesh is
22,862km
2
.TheEastern Ghatsregion is home
to dense tropical forests, while the vegetation
becomes sparse as the Ghats give way to
theDeccan Plateau, where shrub vegetation is
more common.

FAUNA
◦The varied diversity of fauna includesBengal
tiger,Indian leopard, hyenas, blackbucks,
cheetahs, sambars, and sea turtles. The dense
forests in mountains offer habitat to the wildlife.
The state government declared certain areas
as wildlife sanctuaries and national parks.

National parks and zoo parks
◦Indira Gandhi Zoological Parkis located inVisakhapatnam. It is one of the largestzoos of India,
spread over an area of 625 acres (253ha). It was named afterIndira Gandhi, the formerPrime
Minister of Indiaand was opened in 1977. There are eighty species with 800 animals.
Hippopotamus and crocodiles are the special animals conserved.

Wildlife sanctuaries
◦KambalakondaWildlife Sanctuaryis situated onNH 5, surrounded by the Eastern Ghats on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on the fourth. It
housesIndira Gandhi Zoological Park. The park has almost eighty species withprimates,carnivores,mammals,ungulates,reptilesandbirds.
These includerhesus monkeys, baboons, panthers, tigers,wolves, hyenas, pythons, tortoises, monitor lizards, elephant, bison, sambar
deer,peacocks,ducksandmacaws.

◦PapikondaWildlife Sanctuaryis located inEast Godavari,West Godavariin an area of 591km
2
(228sqmi). Fauna found in this sanctuary are
tigers, panthers,gaur,cheetal,chowsingha, sambar,blackbuck, mouse deer, barking deer, sloth bears, wild ogs, hyenas, jackals, wild boar,
marsh crocodiles and a variety of birds.

◦CoringaWildlife Sanctuaryis located inEast Godavari districtin an area of 235.70km
2
(91.00sqmi). It has the rare, endangeredsmooth Indian
otter,fishing catandestuarine crocodile. Other fauna are jackals, marine turtles, seagulls, storks, ducks and flamingos.

◦Krishna Wildlife Sanctuaryis a wildlife sanctuary and estuary located inKrishna districtof Andhra Pradesh. The sanctuary is home for reptiles
like thegarden lizard, thewall lizard, tortoises and snakes.

◦RollapaduWildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located inKurnool districtof Andhra Pradesh in an area 6.14km
2
(2.37sqmi). It is the only
habitat in the state for the rare and highly endangeredgreat Indian bustard. Theblackbuck, wolf, jackal,bonnet macaque,Russell's
viperandcobraare also found.

◦Sri PenusilaNarasimha Wildlife Sanctuaryis located in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. It covers an area of 1030.85km

value.
◦Sri LankamalleswaraWildlife Sanctuaryis located inKadapa DistrictofAndhra Pradesh. It covers an area of 464.42km

◦KoundinyaWildlife Sanctuaryis located inChittoor districtofAndhra Pradesh. It is only one Asian elephant reserve inAndhra Pradesh. The
sanctuary is bordered by the state ofTamil Nadu.

Bird sanctuaries
◦AtapakaBird Sanctuary, also known as KolleruWildlife Sanctuary (see alsoKolleru
Bird Sanctuary), is a largest freshwater lake located inWest Godavari districtof
Andhra Pradesh. The sanctuary falls under KaikalurForest Range. It is one of the
Ramsar convention wetland sites, spread over an area of
308.55km
2
(119.13sqmi).

◦Telineelapuramand TelukunchiBird Sanctuariesare located inSrikakulam districtof
Andhra Pradesh. Every year, over 3,000 pelicans and painted storks visit
fromSiberiato these villages during September and stay until March.

◦PulicatLake Bird Sanctuaryis a famous 481km

Protected area inNellore Districtof
Andhra Pradesh state. PulicatLake is the second largest brackish-water ecosystem in
India. Central location is: 13°34′N 80°12′E. 327.33km

is national park area. Rainfall ranges from 800 to 2000mm.
