Introduction Marshall Mix design is finding of the properties of bituminous mixes like Marshall Stability, flow value, unit weight, VMA (voids filled with mineral aggregates) and VFB (voids filled bitumen). Marshall stability is conducted on the compacted cylindrical specimens of the bituminous mix of diameter 101.6mm thickness 63.5mm. Filler is one of the components of asphalt concrete mixture. It place a significant role on the characteristic and performance of the asphalt concrete mixtures.
Introduction Asphalt pavements are crucial part of our nation’s strategy for building a high performance transportation network for the future. It is necessary to design the bituminous mixes so has to withstand the repeated stresses and deformation and the resultant fatigue. Fillers play an important role on engineering properties of the bituminous paving mixes. Conventionally cement, lime, stone dust are used fillers.
Objectives Adequate stability or resistance to deformation of the mix to withstand distortion or permanent deformation under expected traffic loads . Sufficient bitumen binder content to properly coat the aggregate particles and to provide required durability . Sufficient in the compacted mix allow some expansion of the binder due to temperature increase and a little additional compaction under traffic load, without causing ‘bleeding of bitumen ’. Restrict the maximum voids content to limit permeability and moisture induced damages.
Objectives Sufficient workability of the mix during placement of the mix / paving and compaction . Proper aggregate texture and hardness so that the compacted surface as adequate skid resistance under adverse weather conditions . This study is aimed to investigate effect of different types of fillers (stone dust, cement and brick dust) on the Marshall property of asphalt paving mixes. To determine the effect of the type and quantity of filler on the mechanical properties of filler asphalt mixtures.
1.Collection of materials : Fine aggregates Coarse aggregates Bitumen 2.Basic tests on aggregates : Impact test Los Angeles abrasion test Aggregate crushing strength test Water absorption test Methodology
3.Basic tests on bitumen: Penetration test Viscosity test Ductility test Flash and Fire test Softening Point test 4.Gradation of aggregates by Rothfuch’s method: 5.Preparation of mould 6. Testing
7.Determination of OBC 8.Determination of variation in Marshall Properties on addition of fillers
CONCLUSION Optimum binder content for the selected mix (Bituminous Concrete Grade-1) can be expected . The variation in properties of the bituminous concrete due to addition of filler materials is determined.
