BODY MECHANIC Mdm Rozila Binti Ibrahim September 2022

Learning Outcome At the end of the session, students would be able to: 1.

Definition Body mechanics involves the coordinated effort of muscles, bones, and the nervous system to maintain balance, posture, and alignment during moving, transferring, and positioning patients.

What are the 4 components of body mechanics? The four components of body mechanics include posture, Base of support and center of gravity, muscle-groups, and lifting technique.

Principle of body mechanic Maintain a Wide Base of Support. This will provide you with maximum stability while lifting. Keep your feet apart. Place one foot slightly ahead of the other. Flex your knees to absorb jolts. Turn with your feet. Maintain the Line of Gravity. The line should pass vertically through the base of support. Keep your back straight. Keep the object being lifted close to your body.

Maintain Proper Body Alignment. Tuck in your buttocks. Pull your abdomen in and up. Keep your back flat. Keep your head up. Keep your chin in. Keep your weight forward and supported on the outside of your feet.

Cont..principle How do I practice proper body mechanics? Your feet should be apart, with one foot slightly in front of the other. Keep your back straight. Bend from your hips and knees. Do not bend at your waist. Lift the object using your arm and leg muscles. Hold the object close to your body at your waist level.

Important of body mechanic Bones and muscles must move in tandem with the nervous system to maintain balance, preserve posture and ensure correct body alignment as one helps patients when they transfer from chair to bed, change position on the bed to facilitate examination or move around during therapy. Body mechanics refers to the way you hold your body when you move around. Proper body mechanics help you avoid muscle fatigue and injuries as you walk, bend over, lift objects, or perform other activities of daily living

What are the 8 basic rules of body mechanics? 1 Maintain a broad base of support. 2 Bend at the hips and knees to get close to the person or object. 3 Use the strongest muscles. 4 Use your body weight to help push, or pull. 5 Carry heavy objects close to the body. 6 Avoid twisting the body. 7 Avoid bending for extended periods.

What are the ABC of body mechanics of good body mechanics are alignment, balance, and coordinated body movement. Coordinated musculoskeletal activity is necessary when positioning and transferring patients.

What are good lifting techniques? Start in a safe position. Maintain the natural curve in your lower back. Use your legs. Squatting instead of kneeling. Let your legs do the work. Avoid twisting.

What is the best way to push an object? It is safer to push rather than pull. Keep your back straight and bend your knees. Do not twist at your hips to push, but rather keep your core tight and use your legs and body weight to move the object. Face the load squarely rather than at the top or bottom of the object.
