ACTIVITY: MARSHMALLOW IN A SYRINGE Objective : Investigate the relationship between the volume and pressure. Materials : syringe and marshmallow Procedure : Pull out the plunger. Put the marshmallow inside the syringe. Push he plunger and observe what happens to the marshmallow. Pull the plunger and again observe the marshmallow. GUIDE QUESTIONS: What happens to the marshmallow when pushing the plunger? What happens to the marshmallow when pulling the plunger? What is the relationship of the volume and pressure?
BOYLE’S LAW is expressed as: V1P1=V2P2 How do you derive from that equation? V∝ Where: V= volume P= pressure T=temperature N= amount of gas
Change the proportionality sign into an equal sign. V= K=VP Consider the initial and final condition: K=v1p1 K=v2p2 Therefore: V1P1=V2P2
SAMPLE PROBLEM : 1. A gas occupying a 2L flask at 1 atm is allowed to expand to a volume of 6L. Calculate the final pressure.
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING: What pressure is required to compress a 196L of air at 1atm into cylinder whose volume is 26L? The oxygen gas inside is a 15L gas tank has a pressure of 0.95 atm. Provided that the temperature remains constant. How much pressure is needed to reduce its volume by ½?
