Brachiocephalic artery By Athul Anil Suryansh Agrawal
Brachio - Arm Cephalic- Head Artery of the mediastinum that supplies blood to the right arm and the head and neck. It is the first branch of the aortic arch. It is also called trunk because it is base for two very important artery. After it emerges, the brachiocephalic artery divides into the right common carotid artery and the right subclavian artery.
Location of brachiocephalic artery The origin is at the level of the upper border of the second right coastal cartilage. Superior to aortic arch Inferior to thymus gland Anterior to left common carotid artery Posterior to trachea and right pleurae.
Structure 0f Brachiocephalic artery Brachiocephalic trunk 4 – 5 cm in length (from aortic arc till the bifurcation). 12.1 ± 1.6 mm in diameter. It separates into right subclavian artery and right common carotid artery.
Function Regulate pressure by controlling the blood flow between the arotic arch and the right common carotid artery. Right subclavian artery supply blood to right arm. Right common carotid artery supply blood to right brain.
Anatomical variation Bovine arch- congenital variation Branches of the brachiocephalic artery all originate together from one point of the aortic arch. Occurs in 27% of the population More common in African and Americans.
