CHEMISTRY 10 CHAPTER # 10 BRONSTED LOWRY CONCEPT

BRONSTED and LOWRY gave us acids bases concept in 1923

What are acids?

Brønsted - Lowry acid A  Brønsted - Lowry acid  is any species that can donate a proton (H  + ) to another molecule .

What are bases?

Brønsted - Lowry base A  Brønsted - Lowry base  is any species that can accept a proton (H  + ) from another molecule .

CONJUGATE ACID The  conjugate acid  of a Brønsted-Lowry base is the species formed after a base accepts a proton. BL-BASE CONGUGATE ACID

CONJUGATE BASE The  conjugate base  of a Brønsted-Lowry acid is the species formed after an acid donates a proton. BL-ACID CONJUGATE BASE

AMPHOTERIC SUBSTANCE Amphoteric , is such substance which can act as both a Brønsted-Lowry acid and a Brønsted-Lowry base.
