Unit 57 BTEC Introduction

Slide Content

Unit 57: Sustainable Transport Level: 3 Unit type: Internal Guided learning hours: 60 You will investigate alternative forms of transport that do not rely on the use of petroleum based fuels. You will examine the impact on the environment, the economy and the general population.

Unit introduction Transport is important and matters to everyone. In addition to people needing to travel by vehicle for business, leisure or personal needs, most things we use or consume every day will have been moved by a freight operator. As well as the need to meet these demands in an economically viable way, there is an environmental and social cost in terms of noise, congestion, air pollution and safety. Most transport vehicles still rely on petroleum-based, with significant effects on individuals, the community and the environment.

Unit introduction In this unit you will develop your understanding of the necessity to balance the demand for efficient transport services with the long-term effects on sustainability. You will explore sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based fuel powered vehicles as well as ways to access goods and services that could help to reduce the distanced travelled by transport vehicles. The unit introduces toolkits and instruments for conducting an emissions comparison, and you will be able to use these resources in a practical way. You then go on to investigate the barriers to adopting sustainable transport as well as possible incentives and penalties to influence the adoption of sustainable modes of transport. Finally you will also gain knowledge and understanding in exercising judgement as to the suitability of alternatives for transport needs and develop a campaign tool. This unit will help to prepare you for an engineering apprenticeship, a higher education engineering degree or for a technician-level role in a wide range of specialist engineering areas.

Learning aims Learning aims In this unit you will: A Investigate the sustainability of alternative power sources for transport vehicles B Investigate the wider benefits of reducing the distance travelled by transport vehicles C Investigate how barriers to use, incentives and penalties could affect the demand for sustainable vehicle transport D Investigate ways to improve the sustainability of leisure travel.

Recommended assessment approach Assignment 1 An individually prepared presentation on alternative power sources to petroleumbased fuels for transport vehicles and on the benefits of reducing the use of transport vehicles in a given location, for example a small town Assignment 2 Report, backed up by research, detailing how barriers, incentives and penalties could affect the demand for and use of sustainable transport at a given location. Assignment 3 A campaign tool to encourage people to reduce their private car use to a specific leisure destination and primary research used to refine the campaign tool.
