Slide Content

TYPES OF INSULATION:
Fiberglass or Mineral Fibre
Batts
Semi-Rigid Fiberglass or
Mineral Fibre
Spray In Place
Polyurethane (SIPU)
Polyisocyanurate (ISO)
Expanded Polystyrene
(EPS)
Extruded Expanded
Polystyrene (XPS)
? All Insulation refers to R-value (imperial) or RSI (metric). ‘R’ is a
measure of insulation effectiveness - resistance to heat flow.
? The higher the ‘R’, the better resistance to heat flow.
? There are other factors that effect the performance of various
insulation materials - e.g. moisture absorption

BATT INSULATION:
Section 07200
Mineral Fibre Standard: CAN/ULC S702
Glass Fibre Standard: CAN/ULC S702
Type 1: no membrane
Type 2: permeable membrane
Type 3: vapour barrier
Glass Fibre Batts R-Value: avg. R3.4 per
inch.
Mineral Fibre Batts R-Value: avg. R4 per
inch.

Typical Applications:
Exterior Wood Stud Walls
Exterior Steel Stud Walls
Interior Acoustical/Noise Control

BATT INSULATION:
Performance Considerations:
Moisture - R-value is lost if insulation exposed to
moisture.
Sagging in uneven wall cavities/poor installation.
Better performance achieved in certain
applications if used in conjunction with rigid
insulation (e.g. steel stud wall).

Manufacturers:
Owens Corning Roxul Inc.
Ottawa Fibre Inc. Johns Mansville Inc.
Guardian Inc. CertainTeed Corp.

Polyisocyanurate Insulation
(ISO):
Section 07212
Standard: CAN/ULC S704
Type 1: foil facer.
Type 2: foil to kraft paper facer.
Type 3: polyethylene coated kraft paper.
R-Value: 28 day 7 to 7.5 per inch.
Long Term R-Value: 5.56 to 6 per inch.

Typical Applications:
Conventional roofing.
Cavity walls.
Sheathing for wood or steel stud walls.

Polyisocyanurate Insulation
(ISO):
Performance Considerations:
High moisture absorption means reduced R-value if exposed
to moisture (as much as a 25% reduction).
Lower compressive strength makes it unsuitable for certain
applications or subject to damage.
Low permeance of foil faced is a concern in sheathing
applications.
On The Job Site - must be protected from elements during
installation & cannot be left exposed for lengthy periods.

Manufacturers:
Dow Chemical Company (U.S. Only)
Johns Mansville Canada Inc.
Firestone Building Products
Atlas Roofing Corporation
IKO

Semi-Rigid Fibre Glass & Mineral
Fibre Insulation:
Section 07212
Mineral Fibre Standard: CAN/ULC S702
Glass Fibre Standard: CAN/ULC S702
Type 1: no membrane
Type 2: permeable membrane
Type 3: vapour barrier
Glass Fibre R-Value: avg. R3.5 per inch.
Mineral Fibre R-Value: avg. R4.2 per inch.

Typical Applications:
Cavity wall insulation.
Curtain wall insulation.
Mechanical Insulation.

Semi-Rigid Fibre Glass & Mineral
Fibre Insulation:
Performance Considerations:
Loss of R-value if exposed to moisture.
Lower R-value per inch means thicker foundations &
wall cavity.
On The Job Site - must be protected from elements
during installation & cannot be left exposed.

Manufacturers:
Owens Corning Roxul Inc.
Johns Mansville Fibrex Inc.

Semi-Rigid Glass & Mineral Fibre
Insulation:
Although this insulation shows signs of drainage capabilities when it
becomes wet, the lower 0.1 to 0.2m of the wall insulation remains
saturated. The insulation still contains enough moisture to lower the
insulation thermal value by as much as 18%.
1

Literature R value of 4.2 per inch could actually go down to 3.5 or
lower, when subjected to moisture in the cavity wall.

Literature claim a 3.2% water absorption (ASTM C209-92) - 2hr
submersion with a drying period.

If there is a build up of moisture in the wall cavity, efflorescence can
result on the brick veneer.

Lower R-Value per inch, means a thicker wall cavity & foundation.
Installation & exposure in damp/wet weather also a concern.

Systems. ASTM STP922, F.J. Powell and S.L. Matthews, Eds., American Society for Testing and
Materials, Philidelphia, 1987, pp 394-404.

Spray-In-Place Polyurethane
Insulation (SIPU):
Section 7214
Standard: CAN/ULC S705
R-Value: 6 per inch.
Good resistance to air leakage.

Typical Applications:
Cavity walls.
Stud walls.
Sealing & filling gaps.

Spray-In-Place Polyurethane
Insulation (SIPU):
Performance Considerations:
• Air barrier performance & CCMC approval obtained by
certain manufacturers only.
• Vapour barrier performance - dependent on thickness, not
adequate to meet Type 1 vapour barrier.
• Fire Stopping required in cavity walls regardless of air space
thickness.
• On site application dependent on many variables including
weather & application personnel.

Manufacturers:
BASF Demilec Inc.
Chemthane IPI Canada Inc.
Great Northern Insulation

CAN/ULC
Manufacturing Criteria:
•All Extruded/Expanded Polystyrene (XEPS) & Expanded
Polystyrene (EPS or beadboard) products are
manufactured to: CAN/ULC S701 Types 1, 2, 3, & 4
(formerly CAN/CGSB 51.20-M87).
•Type designation changes according to criteria.
–Thermal Resistance or R-Value. ASTM C518, C177
–Compressive Strength (Min.). ASTM D1621
–Flexural Strength (Min.). ASTM C203
–Water Absorption (% by Volume). ASTM D2842
–Water Vapour Permeance (Max.). ASTM E96
•As Type # Increases, Compressive Strength Increases,
Water Vapour Permeance & Moisture Absorption Decrease.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS):
Section 7212
Standard: CAN/ULC S701
Type 1: R3.75 per inch, compressive strength 10 psi.
Type 2: R4.04 per inch, compressive strength 16 psi.
Type 3: R4.27 per inch, compressive strength 20 psi.

Typical Applications:
Sheathing.
Conventional roofing.
Light weight fill.
Foundations.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS):
Performance Considerations:
Lower R-value per inch than extruded polystyrene.
High moisture absorption means lost R-value
when exposed to moisture. Type 1 <6%, Type 2
<4%, Type 3 <2%.
Less durable on job site & in service.

Manufacturers:
Plasti-Fab Ltd. True Foam Ltd.
Beaver Plastics

CAN/ULC S701 Type 4
Thermal Resistance: R5 per inch (RSI 0.87/25mm)
Compressive Strength: 35 psi (240 kPa)
Flexural Strength: 60 psi (415 kPa)
Water Absorption: < 0.7%
Water Vapour Permeance: 0.8 perms (45 ng/Pa.s.m
2
)
Size/Edge Treatments: 2’x4’ board with ship-lap edges -
eliminates need for 2 layers.
Thickness: 1” to 4” standard, custom up to 5”.

Roofing for Concrete Decks
Commercial low slope/flat
roofing system where the
waterproof membrane is
located below the
insulation.

Dow granted PMR patent
in 1968.

System only works with
extruded insulation.

• PMR (Protected Membrane Roof) - Membrane IS the
vapour barrier.

• Maximum roof membrane protection due to the high
compressive strength of ROOFMATE helps prevent:

•Physical damage during & after installation.
•Shorter life span due to thermal cycling.
•Shorter life span due to UV degradation.
