WHAT IS A BUILDING?
Astructurethathasaroofandwallsandstandspermanentlyinoneplace.The
primaryfunctionofbuildingsistoprovidesheltertoitsoccupants.
WhatisBuildingServices?
Buildingfunctioncannotbelimitedtoprovideshelteronly.Basically“Building
Services”iswhatthatmakethebuildingcomestolife.i.e.whatmakesthebuilding
work.
Buildingshouldbedesignedinsuchawaytoprovideanenvironmentwhere
peoplecanfeelcomfortable,work,liveandachieve.
So,everythinginsideabuildingwhichmakesitsafeandcomfortable,comesunder
thetitleof“BuildingServices”

Abuildingmustdowhatitwasdesignedtodo-notjustprovideshelterbutalso
provideasafe,comfortableandlivableenvironment.
Buildingservicescontributelargelytothesustainabilityandfunctioningofthe
building.
Buildingservicessystemsareessentialprovisionsforabuilding,accountingfor
20%to40%ofthetotalconstructioncost.Figure1showsthecostbreakdownofa
typicalgovernmentofficebuilding.

serviceslistedabovearemoremodernandbecameindispensablefor
buildings.

industrialbuildingsarealmost100%dependentofelectricallighting,
ventilatingandspaceheating.
3.Highrisebuildingsrelyonverticaltransportationandhighspeedpressure
forwatersupply.
4.Althoughthoseservicesareindispensableformodernbuildings,theyalso
haveanimpact.Infacttheimplementationofthoseservicesdemandsa
considerableamountoffloorandceilingsoproperplanningisnecessary
fortheirallocation.

consumptionwhichdoesnotonlyaffectthebuildingbuttheenvironment
aswell.
