X was made to look like fruit juice to allow for its consumption as it was
created in a time when it was socially unacceptable for women to drink
alcohol in public. The original recipe is stated to be a mixture of two parts gin
with one of cherry brandy and pouring in one part each of orange, pineapple,
and lime juice. Also initially called gin _____.
Although disputing sources exist, the lion's share of credit for X goes to The
Long Bar at Y. Y is a historic luxury hotel named after the founder of its
residing country. A name given by the Sarkies Brothers after it's acquisition, a
gamble that paid off.
Identify X (the cocktail) and Y (establishment).
Singapore Sling
Raffles Hotel
2.
X is a brand founded by a founder of Teriyaki Boyz and of late has become
synonymous with the streetwear culture of hip-hop. He explains that the
name was inspired by a 1968 sci-fi classic where an astronaut crew crash lands
on a planet, discovering surprising civilisation there. You might associate it
with a graphic attached on the next slide. Identify X.
During the peak of a frenzy in 2021, people would sometimes confuse X for an
entirely different entity, which was marketed as the ticket to an exclusive club,
offering yearly parties. At this height of the frenzy, these things were
considered a form of personal expression and sold for upwards of $200k a
piece. Which company/product am I talking about ?
A Bathing Ape
Bored Ape Yacht

In the world of traditional tech interviews, there are two disciplines in which you need
to be good. One is obviously algorithms and the other is system design (HLD and LLD).
While for algorithms there have always been a set of good resources which have been
websites like leetcode, codeforces etc. But for system design this is not the case.
However there is one famous book which has been used as the cornerstone for system
design study. This book has a term (X) and “system design” in it.
This term (X) means to understand something intuitively, and is often believed to be
the only english word to be derived from something Strange (land of sci fi). This word
came more into common parlance in the last few years when it became another
example of something in an emerging discipline in the world of tech. What is this
word?
Grok /
Grokking
4.
creatureshop.com is the website created by X’s brother and acts as a sort of
consultancy agency for creating characters and animatronics. A snapshot of
the website is given of this agency. Give X from that.
Another service that they often take up is in the form of actualising new
designs. They standardised the creation of one such design (or persona) for a
highly visual headpiece in 2012. Where can we find this not-so-alive
headpiece from the world of tech(no?)

5.
A city’s civic bodies crumbled under the pressure due to large inflow of migrants
in the early 50s. This helped private players gain significant footing in this space.
One of these was X, which spearheaded development in many prominent
localities of the city (prominent today). Private players, however, brought
haphazardness in their approach to development, which led the local
government to establish an authority to oversee such development, and as a
result resorted to more development through the government.
In light of these unfavourable circumstances, X took a gamble at an area close to
the city, which ended up paying massively. X also entered popular conscience in
the late 2000s thanks to a sponsorship deal.
Identify X.

“Deadcrush” is a song about long-deceased historical
women who members of ∆ (Alt-J) have crushes on.
The first verse is based on someone from the last
century. From the lyrics try to identify the first
deadcrush as well as the blanked out part.

tuKola, a famous brand in a country was produced at Los Portales' facility in
Guane, until the 1980s. Production was then taken over by Empresa de
Bebidas y Licores de Pinar del Río. While the brand is unknown to most of us,
it is used in a country as part of the recipe for a certain drink. This is ironic,
since most would expect this country (of all countries) to use the most widely
accepted variant for the same. However they cannot do so for a particular
reason.
Give the name of the drink and the reason.
Cuba Libre

X originally from Denmark this eponymous brand's founders, first designed a
radio to work with alternating current, when most radios were still running on
batteries.
Despite early innovation it struggled after 2008, and focused on its traditional
strengths: high-quality audio and video products and sound systems.
In 2015, HP announced a partnership with X for some of its products and part of
X was purchased by Harman the following year. Name this brand with a
somewhat fitting name.
Identify X.

On the next slide is a diagram of a retaining wall structure (meant to hold soil
vertically while you excavate the site).
In most permanent retaining wall structures (think modified hill slopes), these
openings are commonplace, serving a particular purpose, which helps in
keeping the lateral pressure on the walls in check throughout the year. What
is the use of these openings ?
When in use, these openings make it look like the wall is not particularly
happy. What gloomy name are these holes thus known by ?
Weep Holes
Meant to provide channels for water to flow out of the
soil.

Dita Von Teese, is an American burlesque actress who was the global
ambassador between 2007 - 2013 for a company. She was part of a campaign
(ad given in next slide) which told women to “Be X” (a perfect pun on the
brand name). What was the name of the campaign, celebrating women's
spirit and individuality (by being rebellious and creating headlines)?
In 2010-11, she was a part of another raunchy ad for a sparkling company,
wherein she was seen pouring something on her blouse. It was said she was
welcoming everyone for a private experience at a house. What was the name
of the house, which could be a nod to another house where she began her
career. (both the houses would have same initials)
Be Cointrieauversial

12.
Technically, this pattern used to phase out legacy systems is referred to as the
Strangler Fig Pattern. It is best explained by a diagram attached on the next
slide. What non-technical term is it better known by ?
The Ship of
Theseus

X and I is the fourth studio album by Morrissey. The layman’s interpretation
would be that he is referring to a quintessentially British brand with a Griffin
on its logo, X, which was sold under a different name in India, a prime
example of ‘badge engineering’.
People have pointed out that X might refer to an eponymous locality in
London, known for its gay clubs (Morrissey’s sexuality is a large part of the
non-political discourse surrounding him).
Identify X.

Pictured here is a painting by Manet titled ‘ The ________
drinker’. It is one of his earliest works. It is said that when
Manet asked for the thoughts of his mentor, he said, "An
________ drinker! And they paint abominations like that! My
poor friend, you are the ________ drinker. It is you who have
lost your moral sense”. Fill in the Blanks.
This painting was rejected by the Paris Salon, with only X
voting in its favour. X’s defining work had been painted more
than a couple of decades ago, depicting political sentiment,
and during this time he was touring Morocco and Algeria,
painting women secretly. X would die some 4 years after this
event, with Manet copying some of his work as a tribute.

In Chapter 14 of The Book of the Judges where Samson was travelling to the
land of the Philistines in search of a wife. During the journey he killed a lion,
and when he passed the same spot on his return he noticed that a swarm of
bees had formed a comb of honey in the carcass. Samson later turned this
into a riddle at a wedding: "Out of the eater came forth meat and out of the
strong came forth sweetness".
This is the story behind the slogan and the logo of a brand which holds a
World Record as well for a certain something. What is the name of the
brand?
Lyle’s Golden

2.
This brand which was created in 2016 aims to bring people together through
creativity and cultural fusion. The name of this brand is an amalgamation of 2
completely opposite words which represents the coming together of different
perspectives or tastes bound together by the love for sneakers & street
culture. With this phrase they are trying to signify that they have a little bit of
everything for everyone which is often seen a lot in Indian X’s (especially).
Which brand?
3.
X is the process of picking grapes to create wine. A wine referred to as X thus is
one made from grapes that were all, or primarily, grown and harvested in a single
specified year. Unlike its more common meaning, X doesn't imply that the wine is
a relic of the past, which might explain some confusing labels.
The following is a collaboration between artist Y and a renowned luxury brand of
X champagne, Z that ballooned to fame.
Z was a French Benedictine monk who was a quality pioneer for Champagne wine
but who, contrary to popular myths, did not discover the Champagne method.
Identify X (a term), Y (an artist) and Z (a band).

4.
Apart from divers and racers, X also made watches for scientists as well.
When the world entered the atomic age scientists needed a watch that they
can wear in their high electromagnetic working environments. Some of these
places had an EM field of 50-100 _____, already high enough to disrupt
mechanical watches then due to blue carbon hairsprings. The model Ref. 6543
could withstand upto a 1000 _____ hence the name, alluding to french for a
1000 as well as the unit of electromagnetic induction
Identify the name of the model.
Rolex Milgauss
5.
The idea for this came to a person in 1989, when his friends requested to be
taught stencil/sticker making. He demonstrated it to them with a photo from an
advertisement, and added some text to it saying, “X HAS A POSSE 7′ 4″, 520 lb”.
Identify X.
The design went viral with a simple 4 letter word and X’s photo. It could be seen
adorned on many walls in the 90s. Looking to profit off of his work, the person
opened a clothing brand of the same name, which was met with criticism from
the underground community. Identify the brand name/ 4 letter word.
(If it helps, the designer in question would go on to design an iconic election
campaign poster)

X petroleum corporation was found by Y among other men. Y apparently named X
after his favourite movie which was released in 1952. The movie was a biopic of
sorts for the eponymous Mexican revolutionary.
Y sold his shares in X, and resigned as the president of its offshore ventures before
switching his career. It is poetic that Y was a founder of a petroleum holding
company, as later in his life, he would go on to be embroiled in huge controversy
in a similar context. Identify X and Y.
A controlling stake in X was ultimately sold to a famous business family. Under this
family, X suffered even more economic turmoil and was sold to a hedge fund who
renamed the company. Fans of a particular football club will sympathise with the
plight of the X petroleum corporation. Identify this business family.
Zapata
George Bush

7.
X was born in Treviso, Italy. To escape the Y they left Italy and settled in France in
1924 along with his ten siblings. This shift to France maybe the reason for his
interest in the field of fashion at a young age.
His forays in this industry were quite successful with him being credited with the
bubble-dress and even being a potential successor to Christian Dior.
However his eponymous brand was licensed extensively to non-adjacent fields as
well. This drew heavy criticism as people felt it eroded the brand’s high-end
perception if he were to simply write down his name down on anything and sell it.
Identify X (the person) and Y (was escaping from).
Pierre Cardin
Blackshirts
8.
The most common explanation is that X may come from the French moniker, “marché
aux puces”, a title that was given to a Parisian market that specialized in selling second-
hand furniture and goods – which may or may not have actually been infested.
Y initially called something different, given how noisy things were in the bustling
shops were along Mohammed Ali Road located just about a few kms away from
Crawford ______. It is said a British corruption of the original name led to it being
called Y.
Another popular story is that a violin of Queen Victoria's went missing while being
unloaded from her ship while on a visit to Bombay, and were later found here for sale.
Identify X (the term) and Y (the place).
Flea Market

(From Shor Bazaar)
9.
X’s company boasts over $300 million dollars in revenue, with roughly 95%
revenue coming from one broad product. Fittingly enough, X was once
commissioned by Disney to produce 20 pieces of something for the release of
Cinderella(1950) in BluRay. Identify X.
Amusingly, X’s first job was at a cabaret bar, where he assisted the entertainers
offstage. This bar was opened in 1869 and is best known from the point of
view of someone else. It is hard to recognise it from current photos, as the
decor was completely revamped sometime in the mid 20th century. Where
was X first employed ?
Christian Louboutin
Folies-Bergere
10.
This concept, which has been reduced to mere characters in programming
languages, traces its root back to typewriters, where a macro was provided to
carry out this task, which would have to otherwise be done manually. This was
usually done along with another macro; in conjunction providing the desired
result.
When the move to computers was made, the terms were preserved as is,
acquiring similar meanings in the new environment. They are now known by a
4 letter acronym. Identify this acronym (you can chose to expand the
acronym for style points too)
CRLF
(Carriage Return
Line Feed)
11.
X has been described as "the most feared Instagram account” by the fashion
industry. It was found in 2018 and gained infamy after getting a Dolce and
Gabbana show cancelled. X involves the name of an Italian fashion brand
started in 1913 known primarily for their bags, with a sort of beverage modifier
perhaps indicating that it does not sugarcoat its reports. Identify X.
Inspired by X, Y sprouted up as a similar watchdog account for the cosmetics
industry. It has in the past, successfully got products pulled off from shelves
by companies like Fenty. It is named after an American cosmetics company,
founded in 1946. It employs a clever wordplay on the company’s indicating the
fact that the account discusses unpleasant or private matters in front of the
general public. Identify Y.

This technology was first invented by the Eastman Kodak company in the
1930s in collaboration with Pan-Am. The technology was aimed at reducing
the weight and space taken by a specific set of items. In essence, instead of
transporting the objects themselves, Kodak developed a process in which the
objects would be pictured and transported in microfilm. At the other end, the
negatives of this microfilm would be produced and then the objects would be
sent on their way. This process was specially utilised in the mid 20th century
as it saved space for transport of far more crucial items. It is said that the
technology reduced the average weight of a shipment of these items from
about 2575 pounds to 40 pounds.
Give funda / What was this technology majorly used for ?
Delivering Letters
to soldiers in war

This was a strange phenomena was all the
buzz in a particular region of France in 2012.
People were puzzled as to why these things
looked as they did.
Upon some investigation, they found that the
cause of this phenomena was a biogas plant
which had been processing waste from a
certain company. The people believed that the
residue from this company’s waste had led to
this. The company agreed to a compromise
wherein they would cover the biogas plant so
that this would not happen in the future.
Identify the profession of these people and
the company.

X was a famous designer who was at the top of his powers in the late 20th
century. He was the heir apparent of a fashion powerhouse, and did realise his
role as such shortly, before being pushed out of the company and starting his
own eponymous brand, known for ready to wear clothes and leather
accessories. Identify X.
One of the earlier collections of X, released in 1965, was the Y collection. The Y
collection featured dresses with bold black lines in between individually dyed
pieces of cloth. Rather than being printed, the dresses were made of pre-dyed
fabrics, each colour in their design being an individual piece of fabric.
Identify Y.
Yves Saint Laurent
Piet Mondrian
The copying was so widespread that Saint Laurent
became a little disenchanted with this collection during
the peak of its success, saying at one point, "I hate
Mondrian now."
