INTRODUCTION Statistics indicate that 70%-80% of cardiac arrest cases occur either in the home or at public places. Resuscitation in hospital and health care facilities refers to prompt actions aimed at preventing death and providing the best possible chances for human survival. 3

Learning outcome Define cardiopulmonary resuscitation Define what is the purpose of CPR List step on CPR List how to perform CPR List precaution on doing CPR 5

It is an emergency lifesaving procedure that is done when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. This may happen after an  electric shock , heart attack, or drowning. 6 DEFINITION

Cont. CPR combines rescue breathing and chest compressions. Rescue breathing provides oxygen to the person's lungs. Chest compressions keep oxygen-rich blood flowing until the heartbeat and breathing can be restored. 7

Purpose of CPR To maintain an open and clear airway. To maintain breathing by external ventilation To maintain Blood circulation by external cardiac massages To save life of the Patient. To provide basic life support till medical and advanced life support arrives. 8

Step on CPR STEP 1 D – danger are there blood spills , sharps , electric wires? Is the scene dangerous ? 9

STEP 2 R - responsive Is the patient responsive? 10

STEP 3 S – Shouting / calling Shout for help 11

STEP 4 A - airway ( head tilt chin up ) Is the airway open? 12

STEP 5 B – breathing Scan for breathing (look, feel, listen) 13

STEP 6 C – circulation & chest compression If not breathing or abnormal breathing (gasping),no pulse, start CPR 14

HOW TO PERFORM CPR Place the heel of your hand in the centre of the chest with the other hand on top. Push hard and fast At least 100 bpm At least 5 cm depth Allow complete chest recoil after each compression Minimize interruption 1 cycle CPR 30:2 (2 minute ) with rhythm check 15

PRECAUTION ON DOING CPR When to stop Returned of spontaneous circulation Manpower exhausted No sign of life Family request Decision by the caring physician 16
