Cartoon Analysis We analyse cartoons to peel back the layers of humour or imagery and find the hidden messages – it's like cracking a visual code!

Watch the next video Freeze Frame randomly Analyse

See what you can observe and understand about this comic?

Discuss How easy is it to analyse visuals without a structure.

SEEING By following the SEE-ING method, you can ensure a comprehensive analysis that considers both the visual aspects and the deeper meaning of the cartoon. S - Observe and Describe the Scene Start by closely examining the visual elements of the cartoon. How many panels are there? What is the layout? Are there speech bubbles or captions? Describe the characters, setting, and any background details.

E - Examine the Elements Look for specific artistic choices used by the cartoonist. Is there exaggeration, symbolism, metaphor, irony, or labelling? Why do you think the cartoonist used these techniques?

Ironic/Symbol/Metaphor/ Exaggeration

E - Explore the Emotional Impact How does the cartoon make you feel? Is it humorous, satirical, critical, or something else? Consider the use of colour and facial expressions.

What emotions are evoked in the following clip? Exclude music and movement. Only comment on the contents of a single frame at a time. This is not quite cartoon analysis , but the lines are blurred intentionally in this film by mixing comic book style with cartoon movie style.

Identify visual and verbal presence of emotion.

I - Identify the Intended Message What is the cartoon trying to convey? What is the cartoonist's point of view or bias?

N - Navigate the Context Is there any current event, historical context, or information about the cartoonist that might be relevant? How does understanding the context enrich your analysis?

G - Generate Connections How does the cartoon relate to broader social or political issues? Can you connect it to something you've learned elsewhere?
