By- C handan and Murali Airbnb India:Growth Pangs

Introduction Founded in 2008, Airbnb operates in 191 countries across 81,000 cities. It is a tech-based hospitality aggregator, offering a platform for space sharing between hosts and guests. Airbnb has revolutionized the alternative bed and breakfast market by providing unique local experiences to travelers.

How Does It Work ..? Peer-to-peer accommodation made possible by the exploitation of Web 2.0 internet technologies. To book or rent out a space, one must have an Airbnb profile. Hosts and guests can chat and ask questions to each other. Hosts have the possibility to accept or deny a reservation

Global Presence and Growth By 2017, Airbnb expanded its product portfolio to include full travel planning under its "Trips" initiative. The company aimed to position itself as a complete travel solution provider, similar to how Amazon expanded beyond e-books. Despite rapid global expansion, Airbnb faced challenges, including regulatory issues and competition from the hotel industry.

Business Model Canvass

AIRBNB Fast Growth February 2011-Airbnb announced its 1 millionth booking since its inception in August 2008. June 2012-the company announced 10 million nights booked, doubling business in 5 months. 2013-nearly 250.000 new properties are added. 2015-Airbnb is legalized in several important destinations.

How does AIRBNB makes money..? Airbnb charges both its guests and its hosts a fee for arranging stays. Hosts are charged 3% of the booking's value to cover the cost of things like processing payments and running the site. Guests are charged 6-12% depending on the value of the booking. Guests get the benefit of 24-hour support in return for that charge.

Airbnb in India Entered the Indian market in 2012, with over 24,000 listings in 100+ cities by 2017. Goa, Rajasthan, and Kerala are the top regions for Airbnb stays. Significant growth in foreign and domestic tourists using Airbnb in India, with Indian tourists increasing by over 300% year-on-year. The Indian concept of ' Atithi Devo Bhava ' (a guest is akin to god) aligns well with Airbnb's values.

Target Market in India Airbnb targets foodies, millennials , and solo travelers in India. Millennials , with over 230 million people, are a large and attractive market. Indians prefer to travel in groups or as couples, but solo travel is growing. Popular international destinations for Indian travelers using Airbnb include Paris, New York, and London.

Collaborations and Partnerships Partnerships with Central and State governments in India to promote local homestays and entrepreneurship. Collaboration with Bollywood , notably with director Karan Johar and popular actor Shah Rukh Khan, to appeal to Indian millennials . Airbnb India works with Thomas Cook to integrate traditional travel agency services.

Competition in the Indian Market Main competitors include Oyo Rooms, FabHotels , and Treebo Hotels. Oyo Rooms, funded by Softbank, offers a different model with franchised unbranded hotels and a premium segment called 'Oyo Townhouse. ' Airbnb distinguishes itself with a global presence and a focus on alternative stays and complete travel planning.

Regulatory Challenges India lacks uniform laws governing aggregators like Airbnb , leading to potential future regulations. Hotel industry lobbyists demand uniform tax structures and licensing requirements for both hotels and aggregators. Airbnb has faced similar regulatory challenges in other countries, which may impact its growth in India.

The Road Ahead Airbnb views India as one of its top markets for the next decade. Key challenges include impending legislation, competition from both local players like Oyo and global travel solution providers, and potential PR issues. Despite these challenges, the market for organized space-sharing in India remains nascent, providing opportunities for growth.

Conclusion Airbnb's journey in India reflects both significant opportunities and considerable challenges. Success in this market will require navigating regulatory landscapes, competing effectively with local and global players, and continuing to innovate in the travel space. As Airbnb continues to evolve, its ability to adapt to local markets like India will be crucial to its global success.
