CHANDNI
►In Almoraa old man lived with their goats. He
known as AbbuKhan.
►He Love their goats as their own child,he
give names to their goats like Kalua, Moongia
or Gujri
►Very often at night one of the goats would
pull and pull at the string till it broke
loose,andgo into the hills where the old wolf
live who eats the goats who came into the
hill.

4. ►Then his no goats are left,aftersomeday he bought a young
goat. The new goat was very pretty. She was white as snow,
and had two little horns on her little head, and a pair of red
eyesHethought, “A young goat will stay with me much
longer. She will soon begin to love me as well as the food I
give her every day. She will never want to go to the hills.”
►One day the young goat said to AbbuKhan ““Dear Abbu
Khan,” ,“let me go to the hills, please. If I stay on in your
compound, I’ll die.”
►AbbuKhan asked the goat “Why you want to go to the
hills,Doyou don’t like the food” and tell the story of Kalua
at fiftieth time.
►The AbbuKhan get annoyed by the young goat and said to
the her “You have to live in my small hut now” but same
night the young goat broke the window and go away to the
hills.

5. ►She reached to the hills, It seemed to her that the old hills
were standing in a row to welcome her. She felt like a child
meeting her parents after years of separation. Wherever she
went, the tall grass rose to embrace her, the flowers
bloomed to amuse her and the wind sang an endless song
of welcome.
►Then a strange voice coming from bushes, the strange
voice of the old wolf ,then the old wolf come out from the
bushes and fight with the wolf. The first rays of the sun saw
Chandnilying on the ground. She was completely soaked in
blood.
►The small birds debating “who is the winner” most of the
said “Wolf,ofcourse…”. A wise old bird declaimed with
confidence, “Chandniis the winner.”

Khan’s compound, she would die.

16. ANSWERS
1.The wise old bird said that Chandniwas the winner because
Chandnihad the courage to face the wolf, and had fought on
till the end. She could have run away at the slightest hint of
the presence of the wolf. However, she decided to stay there
and stood firm on her legs. According to the author, she
looked like a brave soldier ready to fight a treacherous
enemy. She put up a good fight, which went on all through
the night. Even though she died at the end, she was truly the
winner.

17. 2. It was the right decision. Freedom involves taking a lot of
risks. It requires one to be brave and to be ready to face any
difficulty, any circumstance. On detecting the wolf, chandni
could have gone back to abbukhan. However, for her,
freedom was more valuable than life. She decided to fight the
wolf to retain her freedom, telling herself that success or
failure was a matter of chance, and that one must put up a
good fight. She fought with all her strength, and even though
she did not win the fight, she was the true winner. If she had
remained with abbukhan, she would have always been tied
up. There, she might have lived longer, but would have
ultimately died in bondage.

18. ►3. Freedom is life. Living in bondage is as good as being
dead. Everyone craves for his/her freedom—humans, birds
and animals. The value of freedom is the theme of the
stories ‘I Want Something in a Cage’ and ‘Chandni’. In the
former, the man, who had been a prisoner for ten years,
freed the doves because he could identify with the birds in
the cage and their desire to fly. In the latter, the goats left
AbbuKhan one by one because their desire to roam freely
in the hills was stronger than their fear of the wolf that lived
in those hills. Chandni’sdecision to fight the wolf instead
of going back to the safety of AbbuKhan’s compound
showed that she considered freedom to be invaluable. For
her death in an open field was far better than life in a small
hut. This story shows that freedom requires one to be
brave, and to be ready to face any difficulty, any
circumstance. Even if the free life is short lived, it is better
than a long life in captivity.
