Lesson 2 CHANGES IN STATE OF MATTER
OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the students will be able to: Identify the phase changes undergone in a state of matter. Understand the arrangement and motion of particles when kinetic energy increases and decreases. Illustrate how phase changes in matter are affected by change in temperature at molecular level.
PHYSICAL CHANGE
Physical Change Is any change in the size , shape or state of matter.
Changes In State We can change the state of matter by adding or removing heat energy.
Changes of Phase Freezing – the substance changes from a liquid to a solid.
Melting – the substance changes back from solid to liquid.
Condensation – the substance changes from a gas to a liquid.
Evaporation – the substance changes from liquid to a gas.
Sublimation – the substance changes directly from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid phase.
Deposition – the substance changes directly from a gas to a solid without going through the liquid phase.
Instruction: Identify each phase change and indicate if energy is absorbed (+) or given off (-) during the process.
Instruction: Think of a certain situation wherein there is a phase change occur. Illustrate the arrangement of particles during the process.
