CHAPTER 2: ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY OF THE EAR AND HEARING

OVERVIEW The ear is responsible for hearing and balance. It converts sound waves into electrical signals interpreted by the brain. The ear has three main parts: Outer Ear Middle Ear Inner Ear

THREE MAIN PARTS OF EAR

1. OUTER EAR Parts: Pinna (Auricle) Ear Canal (External auditory canal) Eardrum (Tympanic membrane)

1. OUTER EAR Function: Collects sound waves and directs them to the eardrum. The eardrum vibrates when hit by sound waves.

2 . Middle Ear Parts: • Ossicles – Malleus (hammer), Incus (anvil), Stapes (stirrup) • Eustachian Tube

2. Middle Ear Function: Amplifies and transmits vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. Equalizes air pressure on both sides of the eardrum.

3 . Inner Ear Parts: Cochlea – snail-shaped, filled with fluid and hair cells Auditory Nerve Semicircular Canals and Vestibule

3. Inner Ear Function: Converts vibrations into nerve impulses. Maintains balance and spatial orientation.
