CHAPTER 5° Research scope from a quantitative approach By: - Laura Ximena Godoy Rojas. -Angie Marcela Mayorga Quevedo. - David Felipe Romero Cortes.
1.) What scope can the quantitative research process have? KEY WORDS: Scope Types Casuality Investigation Clasification This reflection is important, since the research strategy depends on the scope of the study. Important question What does it depend on whether our study begins as exploratory, descriptive, correlational or explanatory?
2.) What do exploratory scoping studies consist of? Main objective: To examine an understudied research topic or problem. Exploratory studies are like taking a trip to an unknown place, of which we have not seen any documentaries or read any books, but simply someone gave us a brief comment. Unknown ¡¡¡¡ Value of this study. Exploratory studies serve to familiarize ourselves with relatively unknown phenomena, obtain information about the possibility of carrying out a more complete investigation. Investigate KEY WORDS: New problems Identify Concepts or variables Prioritizing Future Research And The increase in life expectancy beyond 100 years, the future population that inhabits the Moon, the warming of the Earth's atmosphere to unsuspected levels, profound changes in the conception of marriage or in the ideology of a religion are facts that would generate a great deal of exploratory research. EXAMPLES: General Summary: Exploratory studies: They are used when the objective is to examine a little studied or new topic.
3.) What do descriptive scoping studies consist of? Investigator goal: To describe phenomena, situations, contexts and events; that is, to detail how they are and how they manifest. Specify the properties characteristics and profiles of. People, groups, communities, processes, objects or any other phenomenon that is subject to analysis Value of this study. Descriptive studies are useful to accurately show the angles or dimensions of a phenomenon, event, community, context or situation. Example: -An investigation that will tell us how many people attend psychotherapy in a specific community and what kind of psychotherapy they attend. General summary: Descriptive studies: Seeks to specify properties and important characteristics of any phenomenon that is analyzed. Describe trends in a group or population. Characteristics and phenomenon
4.) What do correlational scoping studies consist of? Relationship or More variables Between 2 Variables Variables ¡¡¡¡ The purpose of this type of study is to determine the relationship or degree of association between two or more concepts, categories or variables in a particular sample or context. Important: To assess the degree of association between two or more variables, correlational studies first measure each variable, and then quantify, analyze and establish the linkages. Utility of this study. The main usefulness of correlational studies is to know how a concept, or a variable may behave when the behavior of other related variables is known. - try - predict the approximate value - group of individuals Value of this study. -Correlational research has, to some extent, an explanatory value, albeit partial, since knowing that two concepts or variables are related provides certain explanatory information. Example: if the acquisition of vocabulary by a group of children of a certain age (say, between three and five years of age) is related to exposure to an educational television program, that between three and five years of age) is related to exposure to an educational television program, that fact comes to provide some degree of explanation about how children acquire some concepts. Likewise, if the similarity of values in couples in certain Guatemalan indigenous communities is related to the probability that they will marry, this information helps us to explain why some of these couples marry and others do not. Risks of this study spurious correlations: It may happen that two variables are apparently related, but they are not. Scope Variables Investigation Relationship
4.) What do explanatory scoping studies consist of? Explanatory studies go beyond the description of concepts or phenomena or the establishment of relationships between concepts the establishment of relationships between concepts Aimed at Social events Answering causes Physical or PHENOMENA Example: To make known the intentions of the electorate is a descriptive activity (indicating, according to an opinion poll before the election takes place, how many people are "going" to vote for the contending candidates is a descriptive study) and relating these intentions to concepts such as age and gender of the voters. Degree of structuring of explanatory studies Explanatory research is more structured than studies with the other scopes and, in fact, involves the purposes of the latter (exploration, description and correlation or association); it also provides a sense of understanding of the phenomenon to which it refers.
Can the same investigation include different scopes? Sometimes, a research study can be characterized as basically exploratory, descriptive, correlational or explanatory, correlational or explanatory, but not solely as such. What determines whether a research is initiated as exploratory, descriptive, correlational or explanatory? As mentioned, there are two main factors that influence whether a research is initiated as exploratory, descriptive, correlational, or explanatory: -The current knowledge of the research topic revealed by the literature review. -The perspective that the researcher intends to give to his or her study.
Which of the four scopes is the best one for a study? This question is a common one among students, and the answer is very simple: ALL¡¡¡¡ Which of the four scopes is the best one for a study?
