Practical Research 2 Week 1 | 1 st quarter JOSEPH Z. RIZON, MAEd

Learning Competency Describes characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and kinds of quantitative research

What RESEARCH is NOT Research is NOT merely gathering information Research is NOT merely rummaging around for hard-to-locate information Research is NOT merely transporting facts from one location to another

What RESEARCH is? Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information – data – in order to increase understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned ( Leedy & Ormrod, 2015).

What RESEARCH is? At a general level , research consists of three steps: 1. Pose a question. 2. Collect data to answer the question. 3. Present an answer to the question.

Research is important for three reasons Research Adds to Our Knowledge Research Improves Practice Research Informs Policy Debates

Qualitative vs Quantitative Qualitative – it requires non-numerical data , which means that the research uses words rather than numbers – textual . Quantitative – research involves measurement of data – numerical.

Quantitative Research

Quantitative Research emphasizes objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre- existing statistical data using computational techniques. a systematic scientific analysis of data and their relationship

Quantitative Research Characteristics Strengths Weakness Kinds

Characteristics Objective – it seeks accurate measurement and analysis of the target concept. It is unaffected by the researcher’s intuition and personal guesses. Large sample size – to obtain more meaningful statistical result, the data must come from a large sample size

Characteristics Generalizable and Reliable data – data taken from a sample can be applied to the population if sampling is done accordingly Fast data collection – collection can be quick and easy

Characteristics Visual result presentation – data is numerical which makes presentation through graphs, charts, and tables possible and for better conveyance and interpretation Replication – it can be repeated to verify findings enhancing its validity, free from false or immature conclusions.

Characteristics Clearly defined research questions – RQs are well-defined for which objective answers are sought Structured instruments – data are gathered using structured research tools such as questionnaires (close-ended Qs) to collect measurable characteristics of the population

Characteristics Clearly defined research questions – RQs are well-defined for which objective answers are sought Structured instruments – data are gathered using structured research tools such as questionnaires (close-ended Qs) to collect measurable characteristics of the population

Strengths It can be replicated or repeated Findings are generalizable to the population Numerical and quantifiable data can be used to predict outcomes Fast and easy data analysis using statistical software

Strengths Fast and easy data gathering It is objective Validity and reliability can be established Excellent way of finalizing results and proving or disproving a hypothesis

Weaknesses It lacks the necessary data to explore a problem or concept in depth It does not provide comprehensive explanation of human experiences Some information cannot be described numerical data such as feelings, and beliefs

Weaknesses The participants are limited to choose only from the given responses The responses may tend to provide inaccurate responses A large sample size makes data collection more costly
