CHARITY MODEL OF DISABILITY K.Thangavel , Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

INTRODUCTION The Charity Model is an offshoot of the Medical Model. It is based on the understanding that disability is something in the body that can and should be cured. It is complementary to, and in many ways the moralistic extension of, the Medical Model. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

The Charity Model casts the disabled person forever in the “poor unfortunate” role. It depicts them as victims of circumstances It emphasises and encourages dependence on others rather than independence . One might say it is a form of “ killing with kindness” since if this is taken to extremes the disabled person may lose those life skills they had and become increasingly dependent. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

The Charity Model has been developed by non-disabled people Where the Medical Model sees medical professionals as experts in disability, the Charity Model sees non-disabled people as the saviours of disability. Disability is not only something that should be cured, but something that is tragic. It therefore creates a view of disabled people’s lives as tragic and pitiable. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

Numerous charities exist to support and care for people with a particular type disability thereby medically classifying, segregating and institutionalizing many disabled people. However many of them would opt for community life with adequate support. But this model instead of promoting empowerment of disabled people and their full integration into our society as equal citizens, aims at proving care and protection on charity basis. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

characteristics Treats the disabled person as being passive and without agency Focus upon sympathy not empowerment Risks dependency Tends towards only short term relief or assistance and not lasting change 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

The disabled person is represented as and “admirable” solely because they live with their impairment, an object of pity and the focus of attempts to extort money from others in order to address the person’s extensive and expensive needs. There is little or no recognition of the potential for independence or of the role of the disabled person in selecting the services they need or want. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

The entire charity approach is designed to ensure that no real change ever occurs . It is about people doing good for others, it is not about change, it is not about liberation , it is about the agents of charity – the do-gooders feeling better about themselves and the world they live in. It brilliantly co-opts the language of resistance talking about “fighting,” “ resisting,”and “beating” disabilities. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.

conclusion Though the tragedy or the charity model is highly praise worthy in many aspects , it is critized as lowering the self esteem of the disabled. It always make the disabled owing gratitude to the donors. If charitable institutions function with the aim of promoting self confidence and empowerment of the disabled by providing necessary training and oppurtunities for getting employment ,then the charity model will largely be accepted by all. 2/23/2021 K.Thangavel, Thiagarajar College of Preceptors, Madurai-9.
